HAZARDOUS MATERIALS In The Work Place

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS OBJECTIVES - STUDENT/EMPLOYEE WILL: Describe: What is a Hazardous Material? Describe: How to handle a Hazardous Material Describe: Basic safety precautions & procedures Describe: How to read a Material Safety Data Sheet (M.S.D.S.) Describe: Personal Protective Devices (PPDs) Describe: How to recognize a haz-mat problem Describe: What to do when a haz-mat incident occurs

WHAT IS A HAZARDOUS MATERIAL Anything that can cause damage to living things or the environment Fluids Engine oil Trans fluid Hydraulic fluid Engine Coolant Chemicals Corrosives Cleaning agents and solvents Pesticides

Criteria IgnitabilityCorrosivityReactivityToxicity Exhibits at least one of four characteristics— Ignitability, Corrosivity, Reactivity, or Toxicity It contains over 100 parts per million (PPM) of halogenated compounds It has a flash point below 140 degrees F. It is corrosive It contains toxic metal organic compounds A MATERIAL IS CONSIDERED TO BE HAZARDOUS IF IT MEETS ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING:

HANDLING A HAZARDOUS MATERIAL Use personal protective equipment Gloves, Eye Protection, ETC… per MSDS Use special handling equipment Forklift with specific lifting adaptors / slings Specialized hand tools Use correct disposal methods Get M.S.D.S, shipping labels, manifests

BASIC SAFETY PROCEDURES Always wear eye protection Always wear gloves Wear protective clothing when needed Get help when moving large or heavy containers Know where first aid supplies and eye wash stations are located Wash hands thoroughly after touching used oils, fluids, & greases These contain combustion by-products that may cause personal harm

MATERAL SAFETY DATA SHEET M.S.D.S All businesses & schools in U.S. must have M.S.D.S. available to all employees A book containing M.S.D.S. must be stored in an easily accessible area to all persons in the work area and to the fire department

EIGHT AREAS OF INFORMATION Ingredients Physical data Fire & explosion data Reactivity data Environmental information Suggested first aid Precautionary information Health hazard data

RECOGNIZE A HAZ-MAT Fluid or spilled product on the ground Multiple persons displaying same symptoms Person(s) lying on ground next to a spill Unusual smell in area of product Cloud or haze from product area Fire with or without colored smoke

WHAT WILL THE CHEMICAL DO? !! WHAT TO DO !! WHAT WILL THE CHEMICAL DO? Evacuate area immediately Contact supervisor / instructor DIAL 911 (let the instructor do this) Try to position UP HILL / UP WIND !!!!! Obtain as much information about the incident as possible for arriving emergency crews Try to prevent the spread of hazard material Do not become part of the problem
