Hazard Communication OSHA Standards Material Safety Data Sheets

The Facts: Over 30 million workers in the United States are exposed to dangerous chemicals during their work day Because of this: OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) created the Hazard Communication Standard or HCS

Routes of Exposure Contact- usually through the skin or eyes, can cause rashes, burns or vision problems Inhalation- breathing in chemicals, may cause headaches or dizziness Swallowing- usually due to unwashed hands touching food after handling chemicals

Health Hazards Carcinogen- a chemical that causes cancer Corrosive- a chemical that can cause burns or eat away at skin or eyes on contact Toxin- a chemical that can cause sickness/illness, organ damage, or even death Irritant- a chemical that causes reversible inflammation at contact

Physical Safety Hazards Explosive- when a chemical is subjected to sudden shock, pressure, or high temperature causing a release of pressure, gas or heat Flammable- when a chemical catches fire easily Unstable- a chemical reacts poorly when it comes in contact with air, water, other chemicals or temperature changes

The Hazard Communication Standard Includes the written hazard communication: ◦ Safety Data Sheets ◦ Chemical Labels ◦ Safety Equipment: Personal Protective Equipment

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Created by chemical manufacturer or importer Describes chemical in 16-section standardized bulletin Provides information about chemical: ◦ Hazards ◦ Proper Handling ◦ Safety Precautions

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) 1. Chemical ID ◦ Manufacturer contact information 2. Hazard ID ◦ signal word, hazard statements, symbols, precautionary statements 3. Information of ingredients 4. First aid measures ◦ includes symptoms of exposure 5. Fire fighting measures 6. Accidental release measures 7. Handling and storage 8. Exposure control/personal protection ◦ contains exposure limits

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) 9. Physical and chemical properties 10. Stability and reactivity 11. Toxicology information 12. Ecological information 13. Disposal considerations 14. Transportation information 15. Regulatory information 16. Other information

Chemical Labels Provide quick important information about a chemical Labels are attached to chemical container Label is in English and must include name, address, and telephone number of manufacturer

Chemical Labels: Product Identifier The unique name or number used to identify a hazardous chemical The same product identifier is used for the Safety Data Sheets, Chemical Label, and company chemical list

Chemical Labels- Signal Word Warning- used for less severe hazards or Danger - used for more severe hazards

Chemical Labels- Hazard Statement A statement describing the nature of the chemical hazard, including where appropriate and the degree of the hazard. For example: ◦ “Fatal if swallowed” ◦ “Toxic if swallowed” ◦ “Causes severe skin burns and eye damage”

Chemical Label: Pictogram Conveys specific health and physical hazard information about the chemical 9 approved pictograms Either picture or word: ◦ Flame or

Chemical Label- Pictogram

Chemical Label- Precautionary Statement A phrase describing the recommended measures to take to minimize or prevent harm from chemical exposure or improper storing

Chemical Label- Precautionary Statement There are 4 types of statements: ◦ Prevention- statements meant to keep you from harm ◦ Response- statements providing steps to take if you have been exposed to chemical ◦ Storage- explains the safe way to store the chemical ◦ Disposal- explains how to dispose of the chemical safely

Additional Information If the hazardous chemical is transferred by the employer to a second container, the second container must also be labeled Employees who transfer a hazardous chemical from a labeled container to a non-labeled container do not have to label the second container as long as it is for immediate use by that same employee
