ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR READING By Tracey Young

Who can use assistive technology? A child who is entitled to special education, or who qualifies as disabled under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is also entitled to assistive technology as part of the free and appropriate special education plan.

What is Assistive Technology? Assistive technology device means any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability.

Where can I find resources for Assistive Reading Devices? A simple online search provides a wealth of information related to Assistive Reading. The next few slides highlight a few of the resources available and how to find them.

Step 1: Choose a search engine For this example, I am choosing to use but you can use any search engine of your choice.

Step 2: Conduct a search Type terms that will generate results into the search box. This is the search box. Type directly into this area. Key term to search: Assistive Reading Devices, Online help for struggling readers, Reading Devices in Education, Free assistive reading programs, How do I help a readers who needs a little extra help? HELP Read – What is it? -HELPRead is a voice output screen reader program designed for use by individuals with learning disabilities, dyslexia, and low vision. -This screen reader program is also designed for those first learning to read, including adults and younger learners. -The goal is to make reading from a computer easier and less of a strain. -This program is a clipboard reader, meaning that the user or a teacher must highlight and copy text from a word processing file, text file, or web page onto a clipboard before it can be read. -Users can also change the font size and style in highlighted text.
