Assistive Technology Margaret Carlson ED 505

What is assistive technology?  Assistive technology is a broad term that encompasses many different tools and services.  Any type of equipment that can be used to improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability is considered assistive technology.  Medical devices that are surgically implanted to not count as assistive technology.

Two Types of Assistive Technology  Assistive devices are often considered high-tech or low-tech.  High tech devices are complicated and often require training before use.  Low-tech devices are relatively simple and easy to use.

What does the law state about assistive technology? The federal definition for assistive technology is “any item, piece of equipment, product, or system, whether acquired commercially off the self, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities.”

Let’s use our knowledge to help those in need! The laws that help regulate assistive technology implementation are: 1.The Rehabilitation Act 2.American’s with Disabilities Acts 3.Telecommunications Act of 1996 4.Assistive Technology Act of 1998 *For more information check out this site: http://www.ndrn.org/issues/assistive-technology/292-assistive- technology-federal-law-and-regulations.html

Hearing Impaired  Hearing aids/Cochlear Implants  These are personal devices that a student can wear on his/her head or body to amplify sound.  Sound Amplification System  Classroom device that projects sounds. For example, a teacher could use this to be louder for the entire class.

Seeing Impaired  Portable Video Magnifiers  Portable video magnifiers are very useful in a classroom setting because students can hold them and take them anywhere within the school if needed.  The PVM take a small text and magnify it onto a desktop screen or the small camera screen on the device itself.

Learning Disabled Assistive Technology for students who struggle with math Talking Calculators This tool can read numbers, symbols, or operation key aloud. The auditory option helps students check his/her work.

Physical Disabled  Eye Tracking Software  If a student has little to no mobility in his/her hands, they can use the eye tracking software to explore the web. The device follows the movement of the eyes to carry out tasks on the computer.
