What is it? Assistive technology (often abbreviated as AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

How to choose the right Assistive Technology? 0 Choosing AT is most often a decision that you make, together with a team of professionals and consultants. 0 The team is trained to match particular assistive technologies to specific needs so the person can function more independently. An AT team may include family doctors, regular and special education teachers, speech- language pathologists, rehabilitation engineers, occupational therapists, and other specialists including consulting representatives from companies that manufacture assistive technology

Assistive Technology at Work: Universal Design for Learning

AT For Visual Impairment 0 Many people with serious visual impairments live independently, using a wide range of tools and techniques. Examples of assistive technology for visually impairment include the Canadian currency tactile feature, which a system of raised dots in one corner, based on Braille cells but not standard Braille.[6] For general computer use access technology such as screen readers, screen magnifiers and refreshable Braille displays has been widely taken up along with standalone reading aids that integrate a scanner, optical character recognition (OCR) software, and speech software in a single machine

Visual Impairment

AT for Physical Disabilities 0 Physical impairments come in many forms and can generally be classified as a loss or limitation of function in muscle control or movement or a limitation in mobility. 0 This may include hands that are too large or small for a keyboard, shakiness, arthritis, paralysis, and limb loss, among other difficulties.

Physical Disabilities: Solutions 0 Mouth stick - a device that enables users to control input through a stick that they manipulate with their mouth. 0 Head wand - Head wands are very similar in function to mouth sticks, except in this case the stick is strapped to the head. 0 Single-switch access – for people with very limited mobility. For instance, if a person can move only the head, a switch could be placed to the side of the head that would allow the person to click it with head movements. This clicking would then be interpreted using special software.

Physical Disabilities: Solution 0 Wheel Chair--a chair fitted with wheels for use as a means of transport by a person who is unable to walk as a result of illness, injury, or disability 0 Walker--a device for assisting a person learn in walking, consisting of a harness set into a frame on wheels.
