The Importance of a healthy nutritional basis

A report requested by the World Health Organisation (WHO) links adequate intake of fruits and vegetables to health*. THEORY vs REALITY WHO recommends we consume 400 grams of fruits or vegetables per day. This equals 4 to 5 pieces fruits or vegetables per day. So it all starts with a balanced diet: A healthy diet helps ensure that all nutrient recommendations are met Did you know? No one food contains all the nutrients you need, so it’s important to eat a wide variety of foods regularly. eating on the run - can mean we choose convenience foods which are often high in fat, sugar or salt and low in fibre, vitamins and minerals. Food Storage and Preparation Methods Storing foods incorrectly or for too long can result in a loss of nutritional value over time for nutrients sensitive to light, heat and/or air exposure. Some cooking methods also cause the loss of vitamins. Intensive Farming Practices has contributed to lowering the nutritional value of some crops that are produced. Bioavailability of Nutrients Some nutrients cannot be fully absorbed, or can only be absorbed in the presence or absence of other nutrients. there are individual differences between people as to their ability to absorb particular nutrients. INTER individual is between different individuals Some medical conditions or medications can inhibit the absorption of some nutrients and some people have an inherited inability to absorb certain nutrients. Changing Nutritional Requirements During times of stress, illness or when recovering from an injury our bodies need more nutrients. Starting an exercise programme or taking on a more physically demanding job. Pregnancy also has its own special nutritional needs which should be discussed with a medical professional. Our immune system … is a complex network of cells, tissue and organs … is our defence mechanism against foreign invaders, parasites, bacteria, … … if disorders in our immune system occur, this could lead to for example inflammatory problems Skin has a strong defense mechanism.

Our largest organ, counting for 7% of our total body weight, the skin forms the main separation between our body’s internal environment and its surroundings. As such, it will react to problems with both internal (disorders with our immune system) and external causes (reaction to allergens in the environment). Skin has a strong defense mechanism.

HYPODERMIS This layer of our skin consists of a veritable “cushion of fat”. It offers both mechanical and chemical protection. Skin has a strong defense mechanism.

DERMIS Situated underneath the epidermis, our dermis contains fibroblasts, responsible for the formation of fibres: Collagen fibres - our connective tissue fibres, which support our skin’s firmness & elasticity Elastic fibres - a network that runs between our collagen fibres, which promote skin elasticity. Skin has a strong defense mechanism.

Oxidative Stress How does it occur?

In our body, we can find free radicals. They occur as part of chemical processes like breathing and can also be generated when we are exposed to cigarette smoke, polluted air … A free radical is what we call a molecule that is missing an electron. Because it misses an electron, it is highly reactive an unstable, and cannot perform its normal function.

Free radicals can become harmful to our body’s normal functioning: As a reaction to their unstable situation, free radicals can take an electron from another molecule, thus generating another unstable molecule, that in turn can no longer perform its normal function. Step 1 Step 2 Free radical unstable missing an electron Electron taken from functional molecule e- Functional molecule can no longer perform its function This chain reaction is also known as oxidative stress - oxidation of healthy tissue, DNA - and is linked to health concerns such as skin damage.

Antioxidants protect the functions of molecules But luckily, there are those substances called antioxidants, which our body can use to neutralise harmful free radicals. Free radical stabilised by electron donated by the antioxidant e- Antioxidant protects functional molecule by giving up one of its own electrons Functional molecule can continue to perform its function Antioxidants protect the functions of molecules They terminate the chain reaction by neutralising free radicals

We can increase our levels of antioxidants by adapting our food consumption towards substances that are rich in antioxidants. By sustaining a healthy balance of free radicals and antioxidants, you can help your body to avoid the impact of oxidative stress.
