U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012 Heather Henkel and Viv Hutchison September 5, 2012 A USGS Website and Training Materials to Support and Enable Better Science Data Management

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  USGS data is a center part of what we do as an agency – data is costly to collect and is one of our most valuable assets  In order to perform data integration activities in USGS, we first need well- managed, documented, and accessible data as a foundation Why develop a Data Management Website?

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  CDI community members identified the need for better data management in USGS as a critical area on which to focus  We need to better manage our data such that it can be re-used and understood by researchers now and in the future Why develop a Data Management Website?

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  CDI recognizes that there are people and Programs in the Survey who are performing good data management. The website will provide a place to highlight and share those best practices Why develop a Data Management Website?

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  CDI funded “Phase 2” of the website development in FY12  Content Team: Heather Henkel, Viv Hutchison, Lisa Zolly, Trent Faust, and Michelle Chang  Content collected from CDI community when possible Data Management Website: Background

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012 Data Management Website Homepage

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  Website provides a vehicle for “best practices” in data management.  Compliments the Survey Manual handbook  Survey Manual tells researchers “what” needs to be done; the website is meant to provide non-prescriptive guidance on “how” Survey Manual policies can be implemented About the Data Management Website

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012 References to Survey Manual

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  Designed around topics associated with the USGS Data Management Lifecycle* * the lifecycle completed by CDI Data Management Working Group was approved by CDI ELT Sponsors, Linda Gundersen and Kevin Gallagher, July 2012 Navigating the Website

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  Highlighted Areas: Plan, Acquire, Describe, Manage Quality, Backup and Secure, Preserve and Publish/Share Navigating the Website

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  For each topical area, there are multiple sub-areas. (i.e., “Plan” includes “Data Management Planning”, “Organize Files/Data”, “Data Standards”, “Data & File Formats”, “Data Templates” and “Stewardship”). Navigating the Website

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  Website content is organized in a consistent manner in each topic area including Description, Best Practices, Key Points, Tools, and Recommended Reading Navigating the Website

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  Website content will be completed, reviewed and approved by September 30, 2012  Migration to NatWeb will occur during month of September  Website will be accessible beginning October 1, 2012 Data Management Website “Completion” Schedule Goals

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  Leverages work:  DataONE Working Group  Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Training Materials  Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP)  CDI FY11 work in Data Management Working Group  TDWI Training – attended by 6 CDI members in FY11  Complements and integrates website content  Will be available for download from the website in ppt format Data Management Training Materials

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012 Example of Data Management Training Materials

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  FY11 CDI funds used to sponsor a 2-day Data Management Workshop in Reston, VA (September, 2012)  Taught by Tom Chatfield, BLM  Feedback very positive for need for a similar course in USGS Use of Training Materials  Goal is to use materials in a future CDI-sponsored USGS data management training offered to Bureau employees

CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  Training will allow us to “get the word out” about data management best practices and how to apply them  Also provides an opportunity to highlight new data management-related activities  Training will include hands-on exercises and use of data management website  After training is done, website will be available as a support and learning tool Use of Training Materials
