Overview Information If you would like to print this out and take notes via hard copy there are public printers for your use As we update the participant’s guide we will post the revised material on the following website so you always have the most current information. The website is: www.nifc.gov/safety/safety_reprtsInvest.html Most likely you will receive this training and it will be some time before you have the opportunity to use it. The course details information on the investigative process and associated tasks to ensure that you and your SAI Team will be successful.

Overview Information While all agencies have agreed to follow the ISAI Guide, your individual agencies may have handbooks, guides, and established policies that will help you during your investigation. It’s important to remember to use the appropriate guide for your agency as there are specific processes and formats that need to be followed. There may be other agency review processes that exist i.e. Accident Prevention Analysis, Facilitated Learning Analysis; this course only addresses the Interagency Serious Accident Investigation process.

Overview Information From previous classes, we have learned that you will have questions early in the session that are answered in lessons later in the course. This can be frustrating for you if all you hear from us is “We‘ll get to that question later.” We want to give you a quick overview of the course so you can understand how the investigation process works and where your questions will be answered.

Overview Information We have developed an accident investigation process chart. It is located on the wall for you to reference during the class and we have included a copy on your Flash Drive. The course is chronological in nature, so it takes you from start to finish in a sequential manner, as you would experience it during an investigation. Here is the process (Exhibit 1-1):

Overview Information Team notification and activation Initial team briefing In briefing with Agency Administrator Site visit Evidence gathering Evidence analysis and deliberations Final report preparation Closeout briefing Accident Review Processes Department of Interior Follow-up Actions

Parking Lot If you have questions that you can see will be addressed in one of these sections, please let us know and we will write them on the parking lot chart – or you feel free to do that during breaks. If you’re not sure, ask the question…we can always give you our standard reply…That’s a good question; we’ll get to that later in the class!

Course Agenda If you will look at your copy of the course agenda you will notice that we have many instructors and guest speakers scheduled to do presentations in this course. The guest speakers are all experts in their field or have personal accident investigation experience. They can tell you what it is like to conduct accident investigations because they have been there. The Guest Speaker Material file on your flash drive also has a note taking format.
