AS037 – E-learning Goes Viral Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE Lynne Jones 30 May 2012 HLTIN403B

Lead organisation –Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE Partner(s) –QLD Health, Sunshine Coast Health Service District –Sundale Residential Aged Care Wiki address

Background –HLT51607 – Diploma of Nursing –Qualification on skills shortage and priority occupation list –Local skills shortage with staged opening of new Sunshine Coast University Hospital in near future –Health workforce demand double 2013 and triple by 2016 (Qld Health 2011) © Photostogo.com.au

Project Summary –Development and delivery of unit of competency: HLTIN403B – Implement and monitor infection control policy and procedures from HLT51607 – Diploma of Nursing –One of final units of study in the Diploma –Completion of qualification experiences attrition at this stage due to family and work commitments –E-learning will provide necessary flexibility for learners to manage personal priorities and gain qualification

Current statistics of learner group: 65% working as assistant nurses –Will gain promotion to enrolled nurse –Greater responsibility and higher remuneration following completion of diploma –Greater opportunities for articulation –Transportable qualification in terms of working inter-state 35% are job seekers Expected 80% employed within 6 months

Model of Delivery –Face to face initial introduction and orientation –Learning Management System (LMS) my.TAFE (Janison™) as hub/access point for course/unit announcements, document library, forum and assessment upload facilities –Web conferencing iConnect (Elluminate™) for majority of delivery with sessions recorded to allow maximum flexibility for those who cannot attend because of family and work commitments

Delivery Model –expected to experience significant growth as a framework for e-learning deployment within the Institute – already occurring –This project is significant case study for future implementation in School of Health in particular –The teacher, Erica O’Donoghue, who has facilitated this delivery exemplifies this skill development (see next slide)

Industry Partners: –Qld Health – Sunshine Coast Health Service District Claire Hallinan, Acting Nursing Director Education and Research –Importance of developing a culture where online delivery and resources were accepted practice –Requirement for increasing the workforce and taking advantage of technology trends that support this –Pleased to be associated with the project and with the outcomes –Valued being able to make constructive comment

Sundale Residential Aged Care –Christine Willmot, Learning and Development Coordinator Attended meetings and provided input regarding assessment Embraced the benefits of web conferencing and using my.TAFE which provided access to recordings if workers missed the ‘live’ sessions because of work commitments Sundale students the most positive about online delivery –Sunshine Coast valued this input

Reflections –Some students found it difficult to attend web conferences even though online Recordings helped however for the future another option might be to pre-record the main content session and follow up with several attendance options for interactive tutorials relating to the content –Important Institute obtains student agreement where possible before changing mode of delivery For last 12 months some students had face to face delivery and still preferred this

Reflections cont’d –Initial support vital If greater initial support provided students would be more prepared to continue with online study At least first two web conferencing sessions need to have face to face classroom support for those that need it –This may mean two staff delivering initially. One to help with the technical hurdles in person while the other facilitates remotely and gradually withdraws support It is believed that when more staff are comfortable with the medium, the students will be as well.

The results – overall successful –32 students enrolled in unit 24 have completed all assessment including successful completion of practical clinical skills component The remaining seven (7) students have to complete minor resubmission requirements It is believed that all students except one (1) should complete the unit successfully –Students successfully uploaded assessment items and posted to online forums

Promotion: –The project has been promoted internally via Institute wide Staff Communication Forums by the School of Health – Head of School – Lisa Molloy –Erica O’Donoghue and Lynne Jones presented an overview at statewide online iConnect Community of Practice Lots of questions and interest ensued 13 TAFE Institutes in Qld access this

Where to from here: –Interest in web conferencing moderation and facilitation has increased and professional development needs to follow –Each educator within the nursing team will embed e-learning into a unit of delivery –This model will be a framework to deploy for Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE to achieve its e- learning targets in Teaching and Assessment Strategy and Institute Strategic Plan
