2 Moderation Workshop 5 th August 2015 Welcome/introductions & Agenda Overview of Moderation process Guidance through two example courses Opportunity to work to Moderate on your own course(your chance to network effectively with others teaching the same courses) Raise questions or issues of concern

3 Moderation Workshop 5 th August 2015 Benefits of Moderation It complements existing practices and resources such as the AFrame Provides a professional development opportunity for preaccredited Teachers and embeds peer support in the process Caters for different Learner groups and courses Can be done in person or online Can be incorporated into induction and planning ‘in House’ Is a continuous improvement tool Aligns with the verification process

4 Assess need ACFE verification Delivery plan; A-frame course plans Course evaluation (A-frame); Conduct moderation learner Plan Develop Implement Review ACFE purchasing Deliver programs; Upload SCH data

5 Pre-accredited programs incorporate : Adult Literacy and Numeracy Training in literacy and numeracy skills including teaching English language to people from CALD backgrounds. Employability Skills Training in basic skills to support work, life or further learning. Vocational Programs Vocational education that assists people with skills acquisition required for specific occupations to start work, return to work or to change jobs.

6 Moderation of Pre-accredited Delivery  Teachers present, analyse, discuss and document adjustments to programs  Based on a collaborative, peer appraisal process  Assures the quality and consistency of programs and products  An opportunity for professional development

7 Moderation Workshop 5 th August 2015 Peer Appraisal  A peer support model should facilitate sharing of expertise and learning from one another  Consider the learner cohort and documentation supporting the program, i.e. course plan, feedback, student work, etc  Focus on what is needed to meet the requirements of a pre-accredited program  Peer Appraisal should always be a respectful, professional process where constructive suggestions can be offered

9 1Learner centred approaches 1.1The learning design addresses personal, community and employment needs 1.2The program builds on skills, behaviours and confidence to be used beyond the learning setting 1.3The teaching and learning activities focus on the development of employability skills 2Quality teaching: practitioners 2.1The practitioner has the knowledge and skills to engage learners 2.2The practitioner has the relevant content expertise 2.3The practitioner is engaged in ongoing professional development to support quality pre-accredited delivery 3Course design 3.1The program design is based on feedback from – learners; Learn Local adult education organisation staff; and industry and community groups 3.2The program offers recognition and pathways on completion and facilitates the investigation of future directions 3.3Reflective teaching and learning practices are in place to inform continuous improvement models THE QUALITY INDICATORS (Moderation Tool) The moderation process facilitates the provision of evidence that pre-accredited programs meet the following quality indicators:

10 This checklist is designed to guide Teachers/Learn Local organisations through the moderation process by summarising the preparation, recordkeeping and actions along with associated documentation. Moderation Checklist

11 The Teacher who is presenting the course writes in the first column of the employability skills section in preparation for Moderation 1.The Teacher recording during Moderation maps the outcomes or achievements of learners to the employability skills on one side and Quality Indicators on the other. 2.Comments made by peers are documented in the remaining column 3.(Recommended actions are later noted in the Moderation Summary) Moderation Tool

12 This form is designed to:  Collect names and dated signatures of all participants in the moderation process  Provide a summary of recommended actions as discussed and agreed during the moderation process  Document the Learn Local organisation’s continuous improvement actions and due dates as approved by the manager Moderation Summary

13 Moderation Process- 3 Steps 5 th August 2015 1.Prepare (record Teachers comments in employability skills section of Moderation tool, collect AFrame, Learner Plans, evidence of Learner’s work and book the Moderation session) 2.Record (Check that the Moderation Checklist & Tool are completed accurately reflecting the feedback and recommendations of the group and check that the recommended actions are clearly documented in short, direct statements in the Moderation Summary with dates and signatures completed) 3.Act (Using the Action plan section of the Moderation Summary follow up on required actions. When these are completed the Manager signs them off and if requested by ACFE the documentation is sent through for verification)

14 Facilitating Moderation Complete the Moderation Checklist page 1 to ensure you have the required materials for the process The Teacher presents their course to the group while another person acts as scribe for the process Have a group discussion and using the Moderation Tool as a guide work through the employability skills section and record continuous improvement suggestions. Only tick the box if an action is required then repeat the process for the quality indicators When the Moderation tool is filled out check off this section on the Moderation Checklist page 2

15 Facilitating Moderation Complete the Moderation Summary and summarise findings and recommendations Complete the Action Plan section of the Moderation Summary including dates for actions Tick the Moderation Checklist’s remaining items Check that all participants have signed the Moderation Summary A copy is to be retained by the Teacher and the original given to the Manager to oversee and follow up on actions
