Presentation transcript:

 Temperature sensors are the devices which are used to measure the temperature of an object.  These sensors sense the temperature and generate output signals in one of two forms: change in voltage or change in resistance  In order to select a sensor for a particular application- accuracy, range of temperature, response time and environment are considered.

 Temperature sensors are categorized into two types: ◦ Contact type sensors ◦ Non-contact type of sensors  Contact type of sensor: This type of sensor is in contact with the service of a material  Non-contact type: This type uses thermal radiations emitted by the surrounding material or devices

 Contact type of sensor: ◦ Thermocouples ◦ Resistive temperature device  Non-contact type of sensor: ◦ IR thermometers: They measure the temperature by detecting the infraredenergy emitted by the material This consist of a lens which senses the IR signal and converts it into electrical signal which is displayed in temperature units. They are used when an object is moving, surrounded byEMF or when a fast response is required.

 They are available in a bead or probe type of construction  They consist of dissimilar metals that when are heated or cooled will generate a small voltage  The voltage developed between the two junctionsis called discreet signal  This voltage will be in the millivolt range (0.001)

 There are two types: ◦ RTD ◦ Thermistor  They work by undergoing change in electrical resistance, with change in temperature  They are low cost and wide range of temperature sensing

 They work on negative temperature coefficient  They are made up of semi-conductor devices  They have a wide range of temperature sensing  Can be used as a liquid level indicator or as a liquid level controller
