What is FLASH? On campus employment opportunity for first year college students! Various positions in multiple program areas at Campus Recreation. Resources and support program for the cohort. Receive organized training and support throughout freshman year of employment. An opportunity to gain many skill sets, mentorship, leadership and professional development. Opportunity to become a future leader at Campus Rec

What is Campus Rec? Campus Rec hosts Portland State’s rec center. We are looking for team players to make Campus Rec a place people want to be. Our goal is to help create fun, healthy, diverse communities at Portland State. Our Campus Rec team puts on programs open to everybody on campus –it is a great chance to interact with students, faculty, and staff.

FLASH Participant Comments “I met so many people and learning how to network enhanced my confidence even more” “I learned to have more confidence in my ability to communicate within a diverse population” “I have gained a greater understanding of what it means to be a part of a team” “I learned more about myself and how other people’s perspectives on things in life may be different from my perspective.”

How does it work? Campus Rec posts the position announcements during Summer term on the Campus Rec website. Depending on individual supervisor needs, Campus Rec will hire between 8 – 13 people in 3 – 7 different positions. Positions that we have hired for in the past include Member Services Staff, Fitness Staff, Office Assistants, Lifeguards, Outreach Specialists, Outdoor Program Equipment Center Staff, Accounting Assistants, etc. During Fall term, Campus Rec will accept applications through the posted deadline date and time. After supervisors have reviewed applications, those selected for interviews will be contacted.

Who can apply? Current Portland State University degree-seeking students with freshman class standing (defined as having fewer than 30 completed college credits) Maintain minimum enrollment of 6 undergraduate credits for three out of four terms in the year Minimum 2.0 grade point average and maintain good academic standing during employment Positive attitude Commitment to Campus Rec’s mission statement

In order to be considered for employment… You must be able to attend every mandatory FLASH training listed on the FLASH website in order to be considered for hire. No exceptions will be made. Some of the positions require CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First certifications. Free classes will be offered for those hired.
