2 FLASH: Freshman Learners Acquiring Skills (in) Higher Ed. On-campus employment and development opportunities for first-year students Provides resources and support to freshmen who may be seeking their first paid job Opportunity to become future leaders of Campus Rec WHAT IS THE FLASH PROGRAM?

3 This year we will be hiring 15-20 FLASH staff members Member Services Staff The Bike Hub Staff Fitness Center Staff Lifeguards Outdoor Program Equipment Center Staff HOW DOES IT WORK?

4 Current Portland State University degree- seeking students with freshman class standing (defined as having fewer than 30 completed college credits) Maintain minimum enrollment of 6 undergraduate credits for three out of four terms in the year Minimum 2.0 grade point average and maintain good academic standing during employment Positive attitude Commitment to the program and learning WHO CAN APPLY?

5 We are looking for team players to make Campus Rec a place people want to be. Our goal is to help create fun, healthy, diverse communities at Portland State. Our Campus Rec team puts on programs open to everybody on campus –it is a great chance to interact with students, faculty, and staff. WHERE YOU WOULD WORK: What is Campus Rec?What is The Bike Hub? We are an on-campus bicycle repair shop designed specifically for the PSU Community. Our #1 goal is to inspire more PSU students and employees to commute by bike more often.

8 POSITIONS Up next:

9 MEMBER SERVICES STAFF Member Services Staff greet and check-in patrons, as well as help with administrative duties. Member Services Staff also utilize facility management software to accomplish the following: customer service and education, point of sale, access control, equipment checkout, and other responsibilities.

10 BIKE HUB STAFF The Bike Hub Staff play an essential role in encouraging the PSU community to ride their bikes to work, while at the same time learning to teach others to manage and repair their bicycles. There are three levels of staff, all first-time employees start at level one. In this position, you serve as a front desk attendant, teach basic bicycle repairs, and co-lead some workshops.

11 MARKETING AND OUTREACH The Outreach Specialist position works as part of the marketing and outreach team, develops leadership, public speaking, and organizational skills, while sharing information about Campus Rec with the PSU Community. Outreach Specialists gain insight about what it takes to market large-scale events in an urban university setting.

12 FITNESS CENTER STAFF Fitness Center Staff are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Fitness Center and ensuring a safe environment for all members and guests.

13 Lifeguards are responsible for the day- to-day operations of the Aquatics area and ensuring a safe environment for all patrons and guests. This includes being alert and ready to respond in case of an emergency, maintaining equipment, enforcing guidelines, providing customer service, and keeping areas clean and well organized. Need to have American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and CPR/AED for the Lifeguard LIFEGUARDS

14 Equipment Center Attendants reserve and check out equipment to renters and provide outstanding customer service to Rec Center members and guests. In the EQC you keep accurate paper work on each transaction, provide the user with general information on the equipment, and sometimes carry out special projects, such as building, painting, and repairs. OUTDOOR PROGRAM EQUIPMENT CENTER ATTENDANT

15 Accounting Assistants play an important role in providing accounting support to the office staff. While working in the Campus Recreation office, you will be able to see how the student fee revenue fund is administered and will provide you with a unique insight regarding the business functions of a municipality. While accounting experience is not required, this position does require a high attention to detail. Various tasks include generating financial reports, assisting with inventory, travel coordination and foundation accounts. As well as making telephone contact with vendors to discuss purchase orders and payment status. ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT

Answer the following essay question: Explain why you are interested in the FLASH Program, what specific skills would you like to acquire, and what do you hope to contribute? (200 words or less) Email application, cover letter, and essay question to crecjobs@pdx.edu with the subject line: FLASH, (your last name)crecjobs@pdx.edu You will receive a confirmation email that we have received your application within one week of receipt. 18 IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR EMPLOYMENT: You must be able to attend every mandatory FLASH training listed on the FLASH website in order to be considered for hire. No exceptions will be made. Some of the positions require CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First certifications. Free classes will be offered for those hired.
