School council 1 st Vrontados Primary School Chios-Greece

How to organize a school council We got ideas from the British site and a seminar in Prague on how to make school councils organised by the Czech partner school with CEDU the centre for democracy in education.

Preparation Brainstorm with the word “rights”. Discussion on the rights and ways to stand up for them. Conclusion:students’ representation is the best way to get involved and defend your rights. The idea of a school council came up.

Orientation The students divided in small groups walked around the school and wrote down the problems of their school which could be solved without money.

Students followed the following steps Promote Campaign Voting Evaluate

Promote In order to understand what a good school council is, the students took part in several games and activities in classes aiming to realize the importance of their role and the criteria on which they should choose their representatives.

Campaign Students, who wanted to nominate,wrote their manifestos and made speeches to persuade their audience.

Voting Students of all classed voted for their represenatives The school council would have 11 members and four deputies. Elections Results 3 rd December 2014

Evaluation The students were asked their opinion on the procedure and if they had enough time to prepare. Those who didn’t want to stand,were asked what had stopped them.

School Planning Signing the contract of a school council member. Council meetings every two weeks. Preparation for the school Christmas bazaar. Donating the money raised to local charity. Games,competitions and prizes on carnival day.
