Social Studies: Secondary Industries Write down everything!!!

Who can name all 4 main industries?

That’s Right! 1.Primary Industry- jobs where people harvest or extract natural resources. Ex: farmers, fisherman, crops, loggers. 2.Secondary Industry- jobs where natural resources are processed in a plant or factory and turned into something else. Ex: McCains Foods 3.Tertiary Industry- jobs where people provide services. Ex: police, teachers, dentists. 4.Quaternary Industry- jobs where people use specialized technologies to provide a service. Ex: software designers, computer technicians

Secondary Industry  Directly related to the primary industry.  Includes manufacturing and construction.  First stage manufacturing is processing raw materials. Ex: when ore is processed to get the nickel out of it.  Second Stage manufacturing uses first stage manufacturing products to make finished products. Ex: Nickel is used for making stainless steel pots and pans.

Top Provinces with Secondary Industries in 1995 Top Provinces with Secondary Industries in New Brunswick 2.Nova Scotia 3.Newfoundland and Labrador 4.Prince Edward Island

What Secondary Industries Need to Succeed: 1.Locate nearby the raw materials. 2.Locate in an area with a good railway or highway system. 3.Have close access to a strong energy source. 4.Locate in an area where there is a market to sell your product. 5.Locate in an area where you can find good workers. 6.Locate in a place with a low crime rate.

Oral Recap of Last Week: The Secondary Industry 1.Give an example of how the secondary industry is linked to the primary industry. 2.How might the tertiary industry be linked to the primary industry? 3.How might the tertiary industry be linked to the secondary industry? 4.How might the quaternary industry be linked to the seondary industry?

Tertiary and Quaternary Industries (Take notes)  These industries provide services, not goods.  Tertiary examples: hotels, stockbrokers, clerks, couriers, teachers, lawyers, etc.  Quaternary examples: specialized and “high tech” work.  New Brunswick is a leader in the tertiary and quaternary industries. (ex: call centers, instructional designers, e-learning companies)

How are they linked? Example: Fishers rely on weather forecasters to determine what ocean conditions will be like. They rely on mechanics and technicians to check and repair equipment. Example: Factory owners rely on marketing specialists to find new opportunities to sell their fish products.
