Introduction ไ What is Digital Design Automation about? ไ What is VLSI? ไ Why do we have to study this subject?

Why build integrated Circuit? ไ IC Technology driving the whole innovative devices and systems which effected the way we live. ไ ICs are much smaller. ไ consume less power than discrete component. ไ easier to design and manufacture. ไ more reliable than discrete system. ไ can design more complex system. ไ The growth of electronic industry.

Example of VLSI application ไ Electronic system in cars. ไ Digital electronics control VCRs ไ Transaction processing system, ATM ไ Personal computers and Workstations ไ Medical electronic systems. ไ etc….

The advantageous of digital ICs over the discrete components ไ ไ Size ไ much smaller both transistor and wires. ไ leads to smaller parasitic resistances, capacitances and inductances ไ ไ Speed ไ communication within the chips are much faster than between a chips on PCB. ไ High speed of circuits on-chip due to smaller size.

ไ Power Consumption ไ Logic operation within the chip consumes much less power. ไ smaller size -> smaller parasitic capacitances and resistance -> require less power to drive the circuit. The advantageous of digital ICs over the discrete components (cont.)

Advantages of IC at System Level ไ Smaller Physical Size ไ can make a small electronic appliances. ie. portableTV, handheld cellular telephone… ไ Lower Power Consumption ไ reduce total power consumption on a whole electronic circuit. ไ cheaper power supply which leads to a simpler cabinet for power supply. Less heat, Fan may no longer be necessary.

Advantages of IC at System Level (cont.) ไ Reduce Cost ไ Reducing in number of components. ไ Power Supply requirement. ไ Cabinets ไ The cost of building a whole system is reduce eventhough Ics cost more.

Integrated Circuit Manufacturing Technology ไ Let us build a system faster, and more complex system Economics ไ In 1960s,Gordon Moore said that the number of transistor would grow exponentially. The number of transistors per chip has doubled about once a year. ไ IC plant is very expensive. $1billion or more. ไ Is it worth to invest in IC business?
