¡Unos Verbos Nuevos!

Ver: to see VeoVemos Ves VeVen

Whenever you use VER with a PERSON, put an “A’” right before the person. Ex: We see the girls = Nosotros vemos A las chicas. We see the boy. Nosotros vemos Al chico.(a plus el = al) 1.I see the dog. ___________________________________ 2.We see the teacher. __________________________________ 3. Do you see your friends? __________________________________________

Stem-changing verbs

The following verbs are special. You still have to conjugate them the same way depending on their endings: -Ar, -Er, -Ir (from Section F of your packet) cerrar (ie) ……………………………………. …to close empezar (ie) …………………………………. to begin (FOLLOW WITH “a” if you are saying what person starts to do! ) entender (ie) …………………………………. to understand pensar (ie) …………………………………. to think, to plan preferir (ie) …………………………………. to prefer querer (ie) …………………………………. to want

But NOW you also have to change the spelling of the STEM in some forms: Stem-changing verbs change in every form but NOSOTROS. You STILL have to conjugate. These stem-changing verbs are sometimes called boot verbs. Can you see why?

Cerrar (ie)  Empezar (ie)  Pensar (ie)  the “ie” next to the verb means that the E becomes an IE in every form but nosotros!

Cerrar = to close (E becomes IE in every form but nosotros) cierro

Let’s try the AR stem-changers: We close the door. _______________________________ 2.I close my book. ___________________________________

empezar = start (E becomes IE in every form but nosotros) *** follow this verb with an A if you are saying start an activity: ex: Yo empiezo a comer = I start to eat. empiezo

1. He starts to study. ______________________________________ 2. They start to REST(fix in packet). _______________________________________ _________________ 3. My friends and I start to do HW. _______________________________________ _____________________ 4. You start the HW. _______________________________________ _____________

Pensar = tothink / plan_ (used with QUE! for that ) pienso

1. I think that math is boring. _______________________________________ _____________________ 2. We think that history is interesting. _______________________________________ _________________________ 3. ADD THIS! We plan to eat at 5:30. ____________________________________

Let’s do the –ER verbs now. entender (ie) to understand querer (ie) to want

entender = _______________________ There are 3 Es in this verb! To determine which one to stem-change, 1. look at the ending and 2. stem-change the first E that comes before the ending.

Entender = to__understand_____ entiendo

1.I understand the problem. __________________________________________ ____________________ 2.Do you understand science? __________________________________________ ____________________ 3.We understand Spanish. __________________________________________ ____________________

Querer = to__want/love_____ quiero

4.I want to live in a big house. ______________________________________________ ________________ 5.Do you want to eat lunch now? ______________________________________________ ________________ 6.We don’t want to study. ______________________________________________

And finally, the –IR verbs: only one in this chapter. Preferir = to prefer. Which E do you stem change?

Preferir= to__prefer_____ Prefiero

1. We prefer to eat in the park. __________________________________________ _______________________ 2. Do you prefer to run or to ride a bike? __________________________________________ _______________________ 3. I don’t prefer the bananas. __________________________________________ _______________________
