Climate Change adaptation Strategies in Crop Production in Swaziland: A Cost-Benefit Analysis by Phindile Shongwe

Introduction  Agriculture is major income source, 9% GDP SD  Climate sensitive, contributes GHGs emissions, CC & variability  Southern Africa will be hotter and drier, 1.5–3.0 ̊C, change precipitation  Food insecurity, increased vulnerability

Problem Statement  Poverty, rain-fed subsistence farming  Droughts, floods resulting in yields decline, severe poverty yet demand is ever increasing.  need to adapt & assessment of cost and benefits.

Specific Objectives  Identify negative impacts of CC on crop production.  Identify current adaptation strategies, recommend appropriate strategies, Cost-benefit analysis  recommend policy options needed

Map of Swaziland

METHODOLOGY  Secondary and primary data  DSSAT Crop model, IMPACT model, CBA  Recommend appropriate policies

Thank you
