Background Skills Funding Agency which is an executive Agency to BIS and responsible for the National Apprenticeship Service NAS work with large employers to encourage Apprenticeship recruitment and programme development Small Business Team provides services to smaller employers offering Apprenticeship opportunities Apprenticeship vacancies service work with Apprenticeship providers to advertise vacancies, free of charge, for young people to apply (last year offering 100,000 vacancies) Promotion and communication of Apprenticeships through a range of activities, such as Awards, Apprenticeship Grant for Employers, Campaigns or Policy changes

The vision……….. Further added to with a target of 3 million apprenticeships over the next 5 years

Accelerate growth Create opportunities in professions where there have never been apprentices before Higher level technical and professional routes with equal esteem to academic-only options A route simple to access for employers and apprentices to gain the skills they need

Apprenticeships are getting even better!

Apprenticeship reforms To meet the needs of the future economy and businesses To ensure apprenticeships are more rigorous and responsive to the needs of employers following Richard Review So apprenticeships are viewed with the same esteem as University To build on existing strengths

What are the main aims of the reform? High quality Higher expectations of English and maths, more assessment at end of apprenticeship and introducing grading Simple Complex frameworks to be replaced by standards of around two pages written by employers Employer driven Ensuring rigorous training that will support economic growth

What are the changes? Standards designed by employers will replace existing frameworks New standards will be clear and concise, written by employers and no more than two pages long All apprenticeships will have a synoptic end-point assessment Apprenticeships will be graded for the first time All apprenticeships will last a minimum of 12 months

Level of Apprenticeships Different levels of Apprenticeship available Intermediate Apprenticeship Advanced Higher Level 2 12-18 months Equivalent to 5 GCSEs A* - C Level 3 18-48 months Equivalent to 2 A-levels Levels 4,5,6,7 24 months+ Equivalent to foundation degree level+ Speaker notes: There are 3 levels of Apprenticeships Intermediate Level Apprenticeships – equivalent to 5 A*-C GCSEs Advanced Level Apprenticeships – equivalent to 2 A-levels Higher Apprenticeships – equivalent to foundation degree and 4-5 vocational qualifications. Higher Apprenticeships are in development for levels 6 and 7 equivalent to bachelors and masters degrees Apprenticeships have a minimum of 12 months, and can take up to four years to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship, the apprentices ability and the industry sector Level 4 (Certificate of Higher Education) Level 5 (Foundation Degree) Level 6 (Bachelor’s Degree) Level 7 (Master’s Degree) Additional notes: When looking for an Apprenticeship vacancy you will need to look at the entry criteria e.g. just because you already have GCSE’s at levels A-C does not automatically mean you can apply for an Advanced Apprenticeship in engineering. You would not want an untrained person to service your car or cut your hair so some sectors still require you to start at an introductory level. Also, A-levels do not automatically mean you can move directly into a Higher Apprenticeship, there may be additional criteria depending on the sector. Plus knowledge, competence, and employability skills

Degree apprenticeships Degree apprenticeships are the latest model to be developed as part of higher apprenticeship standards, seeing apprentices achieving a full bachelor’s or master’s degree as a core component of the apprenticeship. Must last a minimum of one year and degree apprenticeships in particular will last longer, typically up to four years, though there is no fixed maximum duration. As with all Apprenticeships, degree apprenticeships are funded through Government and the employer and the apprentice is paid a wage.
