1 The Changing Face of Apprenticeships.
Jane Lowe – Apprenticeship Manager Good Morning, My name is Jane Lowe and I am the Apprenticeship Manager at the University of Derby Describe what my role is “Great people, original thinking, inspiring individuals – changing lives”

2 The Government Drive for Apprenticeships.
The government priority for Apprenticeships was clearly set our in 2015 in the paper “English Apprenticeships our 2020 vision”. Apprenticeships are ‘central to the Government’s drive to give people the skills employers need to grow and compete.’ Government’s investment in apprenticeships in was over £1.5bn Commitment of 3m Apprenticeships by 2020. Apprenticeships are essentially jobs with training/study. Higher Level or Degree Apprenticeships cover levels 4 to 7 (equivalent to certificate of HE foundation degree, degree and master’s degree) Lower levels are from 2-3. Levy from 2017 : The rate for the levy will be set at 0.5% of an employer’s pay bill and will be collected via PAYE. If you are a small business for every 10% you pay the government will match 90%. For those businesses with less than 50 employees, apprenticeships are fully funded. The policy priority of the current administration for Apprenticeships was clearly set out in 2015 in the paper “English Apprenticeships: Our 2020 Vision”. This included a commitment to achieve 3m Apprenticeships by the end of the current session of Parliament (2020).

3 The University of Derby's position in delivering apprenticeships.
We fully support the governments drive in delivering apprenticeships. Apprenticeships provide a solid base for career progression over the course of a lifetime. Working with employers and LEP’s (Local Enterprise Partnerships) to create demand led apprenticeships. Driving the aspirations of all apprentices. UoD supportive of any moves to increase the availability and quality of Apprenticeships, and we are working with our staff, partner colleges, and other stakeholders in ensuring the creation of a viable, accessible, effective and high-quality programmes from level 2 to level 7. As we currently deliver 2 Higher apprenticeships already, we firmly believe that Apprenticeships are a proven and successful learning programme, popular with employers and learners alike, providing a solid base for career advancement over the course of a working lifetime. Therefore with an award of £250,000 from HEFCE to develop more opportunities in apprenticeships we continue to increase employer engagement in the design of Apprenticeships to ensure that they properly reflect the needs of industry and the economy at large, and to encourage a greater resource contribution from employers to fund a demand-led programme which clearly provides bottom-line benefits to their businesses. We aim to reinforce the reputation of the benefits that apprenticeships will have by raising aspirations of the Apprentices themselves. We believe that they should always have access to all the information they need regarding the full range of options and pathways available to them in both local labour markets and well beyond.
