Addition Properties 4 th Grade Math Mrs. Walker

Vocabulary Say It! Addend Sum Commutative Property Associative Property Zero or Identity Property

Addend Any number being added together = 15

Sum The answer to an addition problem = 8

Commutative Property of Addition The order numbers are added does not change the sum = = 5 so… = 1 + 4

Associative Property of Addition The way numbers are grouped when added does not change the sum. (5+2)+3 5+(2+3)

Zero or Identity Property of Addition The sum of any number and 0 is the number. 8+0=8 0+8=8

Whiteboards: Check what you Know! Complete the number sentence and name the property _____ = (5 + _____) + 2 = 5 + (9 + 2) = _____ =_____ 5. ( ) + 13 = 27 + ____________ 6. (15 + 7) + 23 =15 + ____________ = 61 + _____

Word Problem Practice: I have 30 minutes until I have to leave for school. I have to clean my room and fold the clothes before I can leave. It will take me 20 minutes to clean my room and 10 minutes to fold the clothes. Do I have enough time to do both chores before I leave? If so, does it matter what order I do them in? Use the Commutative Property of Addition to prove your answer. Do I have enough time? = 30 YES!!! Does it matter the order? = = 30 NO!!! Now, you write a word problem using the Commutative Property of Addition to prove the answer.
