Project Work: An Amusing Genre – a Limerick.

The Project goal: The Project goal: to define the characteristic features of English folklore as an example of a limerick.

The aims are: to define and analyze genre features of a limerick(the origin, the language means, the form and translation); to find a match in Russian folklore comparing a limerick with chastushka and perevyortish;

The project object: the definition of the distinctive English folklore features. The project subject: a limerick

Methods: Reading special literature Analysis Synthesis

Main Output: A Limerick is a popular form of a short nonsensical humorous poem which appeared in the UK. Limericks are integral parts of the linguistic culture of English speaking peoples of the world. This form of limerick, like any other, reflects the people's life, their beliefs, ideals, who find themselves in poetry, music and literature.

There are 3 versions of its origin: The name of the city of Limerick, located in Ireland. The name of their most famous writer - Edward Lear (Lear + lyric - the lyrics). The Irish word "a merry lay", which means "happy song".

Edward Lear - the author of 212 Limericks.

The form of limericks is strictly fixed: they consist of five lines.

Limerick begins with the words "There was a..."

Differences between the perevyortish and chastushka from the Russian folklore and limerick from the English folklore.

Many of perevyortishi have no clear rhyme, in contrast to a limerick. Вдруг из - под собаки Лают ворота Выхватил телегу Конь из - под кнута ( Перевертыш ) There was an Old Man of the North Who fell into a basin of broth … (Limerick)

There is a different pattern of rhyme. Limerick. AAVVA Perevyortish. CABABC

There is a different number of lines. Limerick has 5 lines, and perevyortish usually has only 4 or 6.

Similarities Humour Funny things A lot of nonsense Food for imagination A fantastic plot

Would you like to compose or translate such verse?
