The Teachings of Limerick

The Basics of Limerick A Limerick is a five line poem. They are very silly and humorous. They are very fun to write and read. In a Limerick, the first second and fifth lines rhyme, and have three beats to the rhythm. Also, the third and fourth lines rhyme, and have two beats to the rhythm.

How To Make A Limerick The sun is shining today, The first step to making a limerick is to pick a word that you can rhyme with. One word that is easy to rhyme with is today. Words such as bay, day, lay, may, or play rhyme with today. Let’s use play. The sun is shining today, I will go out to play, Since the first, second, and fifth lines have to rhyme, we have to come up with another rhyming word. The third and fourth lines now have to rhyme. 3. I did my chores, And straightened my drawers, Now we have to find a word that rhymes with today and play. 5. So now I can go out to play

Fun With Limericks Limericks can be about almost anything you want. They can be humorous or serious. This limerick is about nature. The pretty falling leaves, Fell and made me sneeze, The tree over there, Held a pear, It swayed and fell with the breeze

Beats To The Rhythm Beats are very important in a limerick. Notice that the limericks you have just seen had the correct beats to the rhythm. Remember that the first, second, and fifth lines have three beats to the rhythm while the third and fourth line have two beats to the rhythm.

Homework!!! For your homework you have to pick a partner and come up with a limerick that is funny, has to do with nature, or something customary that you will present. One pair has to make one limerick.

Good-bye We are going to recite one last poem before we go. Right now we have to go, We wish you enjoyed the show, We hope you had fun, But now we are done, You can now make limericks, no?
