Search on Journal of Dairy Science ® An Overview April

Search Search is reviewed as follows in this presentation: Simple search from the home page Advanced search Search from within an article/abstract Search results Personalization options from search results 2

Simple Search: Home Page 3 A simple, quick search can be executed from this search bar, included on every page. The simple search defaults to searching All Fields, which includes the options Article Title, Abstract, Keywords Authors Article Title Abstract You can search All Fields or confine it to the most appropriate field for your query. The scope of the simple search is the within JDS only. To extend the scope, you will need to use the Advanced Search function. See Slide 4.

4 Advanced Search: Search This Journal Define the scope of your search Define your search criteria (fields you wish to be searched) and options for word matching. Define specific volumes/issues to search Define specific dates or time periods to search Search by DOI (digital object identifier) Define how you wish your results sorted Clicking on the Advanced Search link will bring up this screen. You have several options on this page.

5 Advanced Search: Search Criteria ― Search Scope Search Within: You can define the scope of your search. The default is to search JDS, but you can include content from other journals on the HealthAdvance platform or from content on Medline. Options are to select specific titles from the dropdown menu or select multiple titles. You can opt to include Medline by checking the box or clicking on the Medline tab. If you opt to select specific titles from the dropdown menu, you can select All Periodicals (scope to include all journals on the platform) or select a specialty (scope to include all HealthAdvance titles in that specialty) If you opt to select a specialty, all HealthAdvance titles in that specialty will be searched. See example below of titles included in the veterinary medicine specialty.

6 Advanced Search: Search Criteria ― Search Scope ( CONT ’ D ) If you opt to select multiple titles, you can select a specialty (this will search all HealthAdvance titles in that specialty) or search for a title, which will return a list of journal titles. You can then select a title or titles, by clicking in the Select box at the left and then clicking Add You will then see this change in the search scope shown.

7 Advanced Search: Search Criteria ― Keywords and Fields Fielded Search: You can define the fields you wish to be searched. The default is All fields, but you can select a specific field if you wish. The options are  Title: Limits the search to article titles only.  Author: Limits the search to author names only.  Abstract + Citation: Limits the search to text of the abstract and citations (references) only.  Citation: Limits the search to the citations (references) only. You can check the Match text exactly box to enhance your search query. Advanced operators can be added to keywords to enhance the query:  AND: to match all terms  OR: to match any terms  NOT: to exclude specific terms

8 Advanced Search: Search Criteria ― Dates Dates: You can define your search by date range:  The first box defaults to All available dates, but you can select a more specific option from the dropdown list  You can also specify the search by selecting a begin and end date (consisting of month and year).

9 Advanced Search: Search Criteria ― Volume/Issue, Page # Volume, Issue, Page Number: You can define which volume and/or issue of the journal you want to search (excludes other volumes and issues). You can also search by starting page number.

10 Advanced Search: Defining Sorting of Results Results Sorting: You can define the way in which the search results will be sorted when returned. The options are By Relevance (default) or By Date. This can also be changed on the Search Results page.

11 Advanced Search: Search by DOI The article DOI (digital object identifier), is included in each article. For more info, see Search by DOI: You can also search by the article DOI (digital object identifier), a unique ID for each article.

12 Advanced Search: Search Criteria ― Medline Search Within: If you wish to include Medline, you can:  check the box for Medline on the Periodicals tab (see previous slides on Advanced Search) or  click on the Medline tab See Slide 7. You can specify the article type to be searched (see options at right). See Slides 8, 9, and 10. You can specify the language to be searched (see extract from dropdown list at left).

13 Search From Within the Article Additional search options are available within an abstract or the full article:  Search on an author name  Related Articles search  Keyword search Search on an author name. See Slide 14. Search on keyword. See Slide 15. Related Article search. See Slide 16.

14 Search From Within the Article: Search on Author Name Clicking on an author name in the author listing within an abstract or the full article will search platform-wide (plus Medline, shown in separate tab) for that author name. Please note that this is a general platform-wide search without any further search criteria specified. Personalization Options: You can  Edit your search  Save your search  Save the search as an alert More Personalization Options: You can also  View abstracts or preview  abstracts  Add any result to your reading list  Export citations

15 Search From Within the Article: Keyword Search Clicking on a keyword within an abstract or the full article will initiate a search for that keyword across the Journal of Dairy Science.

16 Clicking on Related Articles in the Article Tools panel to the right of the abstract or full article will initiate a platform-wide search for related articles. Search From Within the Article: Related Article Search

17 Search Results Search results will display at the top of the Search Results page, with the appropriate tabs, each showing the number of returns in parentheses.  Periodicals: Shows the text-based results  Images: Shows results of image search  Medline: Shows results from Medline search Personalization Options  Edit the current search query  Save the search  Save the search as an alert (to receive updates on this query when new content is posted) Number of pages of resultsMore Personalization Options: You can also  View abstracts (check box next to title)  abstracts  Add any result to your reading list  Export citations For explanation of result, see next slide. For an explanation of filtering options, see next slide.

18 Search Results: Review of Individual Result Author Names: Long author lists will truncate; click et al. to expand/hide the full list Type: shows the type of content; e.g., full-length article, editorial. Allows you to filter or sort results by content type. Date: shows the date of content (month/year) You can sort results by date. Source: identifies the source of the content. Allows you to sort results by this filter. You can sort results by using these three filters. Viewing Options: You can  Preview: First few lines of abstract opens within result; click to hide  Abstract, Full Text, PDF, Add-Ons: Each link allows you to view that file or format, provided you have the necessary entitlements.

19 Search Results: Scopus Citation You can view articles that cite this article on Scopus.com. NOTE: Functionality within Scopus requires a subscription (license) to this institutional product. Without a license, you will see the list of articles and have access to basic information.

20 Search Results: Images A search query will search within figure captions, as well as text, and returns the results in the Images tab. The image thumbnail shows the caption and the search term (highlighted). You can  View the image full size (opens in a new window)  View in the article (applies only if user has access to view full text)

21 Search Results: Personalization ― Save a Search Saved Searches This option allows you to save searches and display them in My Account.

22 Search Results: Personalization ― Save a Search Alert Save Search as Alert This option allows you to create an alert notifying you of new search results. To Save a Search as an Alert:  Click this option on the results page.  A dialog box will prompt you to assign a frequency to receive the alerts (daily, weekly or monthly).  You may manage saved search alerts from your account.

23 Search Results: Personalization ― View Abstract View Abstract Checking the box next to the title and clicking the View Abstract option opens the article abstract with the search term highlighted. This screen includes basic tools (print, , add to my reading list, export).

24 Search Results: Personalization ― Abstract Abstract Checking the boxes next to the title and clicking the Abstract option will allow you to content to yourself or a colleague. One or more article abstracts can be sent at one time.

25 Search Results: Personalization ― Add to My Reading List Add to My Reading List Checking the box next to the title and clicking the Add to My Reading List option adds this content to your personal folder in My Account.

26 Search Results: Personalization ― Export Citation Export Citations Checking the box next to the title and clicking the Export Citations option exports the citation to your specified format of your preference (those listed plus ASCII).
