3 –The ‘Building resilience’ initiative supported 4 countries (India, Indonesia, Maldives, Sri Lanka) to address gaps in community preparedness, building national capacity, public awareness, and enhancing tsunami risk research and knowledge. –3 year initiative, €6.48 million, more than 19 partners – being coordinated by UNISDR Asia Pacific. –It could be the first true joint work-programme of ISDR system partners; –It could be one of the first regional programmes to link the interest of tsunami recovery into a longer-term tsunami resilience building initiative at government, community and research levels. 5 Focus –1.1 The capacities of national platforms and institutions for disaster risk reduction strengthened. –1.2 Integrated disaster risk reduction in environmental coastal zone management implemented. –1.3 Coordination, information exchange and learning among targeted countries facilitated and enhanced. Key achievements : Government officials at Island and Atoll levels better equipped with knowledge and skills on Disaster Management planning (Maldives) 3420 – No. of stakeholders from different stakeholder groups participated in simulation / mock exercises (Indonesia) No. of Women trained in preparing disaster preparedness and mitigation plans at village level (India) Objective 3: Strengthened disaster risk reduction capacities of local communities

8 –4.1 Field research and comparative studies on the risks and socio-economic impacts of disasters carried out in high risk areas Partners: UNDP Regional Centre, NIED, UNDP Country Offices, NIED, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Practical Action Key achievements :- 3 - report on cost benefit analysis highlighting key findings and recommendations for most appropriate and cost-benefit mitigation and/adaptation measures developed (Maldives) Tsunami Sedimentation Survey conducted in 3 COUNTRIES Objective 4: Research and analysis on the risk and impact of tsunamis

9 With over 90% of funding programmed across the 4 countries, 19 partners, reaching multi-stakeholders in national governments and districts at risk, progress is good. The challenge is to capture the impacts and not only the success, for the donor, the partners and the beneficiaries. –UNISDR along with all the partners is currently capturing the lessons learned but more towards addressing the impact and not only the achievements. –On the same lines, DEV-TV has been contracted to develop a 30 minutes movie highlighting the achievements, mechanism and impacts on the communities and stakeholders across the four countries. But the bigger question for all of us is - – How do we upscale the achievements? – What are the gaps? – What were the lessons learned? Good and bad practices? Leading to ? What’s Next
