Radiation Safety Training WSU Radiation Safety Program Washington State University Radiation Safety Office

WSU Radiation Safety Program WSU Operates under a Broad Scope Radioactive materials License.

WSU Radiation Safety Program The WSU Radioactive Materials License is: - Issued by the Washington State Department of Health, DOH (Our Regulatory Authority) - DOH issues Radiation Control Regulations and Provides Radiation Machine Registration

WSU Radiation Safety Program The WSU Radiation Safety Committee, (RSC) establishes Radiation Safety Policies at WSU. The RSC is a presidential committee:

THE RADIATION SAFETY COMMITTEE Establishes policies of radiation protection at WSU. Ensures compliance with policies Reviews applications and provides approval to use radioactive materials Audits Radiation Safety Office records

The RADIATION SAFETY COMMITTEE Web Site

WSU Radiation Safety Program The Radiation Safety Office (RSO): Implements Policies, Manages Services, and Ensures Compliance Authorized Users and Radiation Workers: Are Responsible for A Safe and Compliant Research Program Our Regulatory Philosophy is: ALARA “AS LOW AS REASONABLY ACHIEVABLE”

“AS LOW AS REASONABLY ACHIEVALBLE” You MUST make every reasonable effort to maintain exposures to radiation as far below the regulatory dose limits as is practical, consistent with the purpose for which the licensed or registered activity is undertaken. It is also a regulatory requirement!

The Radiation Safety Office (RSO) Ensures compliance with State regulations (WAC 246) Implements the Policies of the Radiation Safety Committee, RSC. Manages all aspects of the Radiation Control Program

The Radiation Safety Office Gives prior approval for acquiring any radioactive material. (purchases, transfers and gifts) Receives, tests, and delivers radioactive materials. Collects, Processes, and Disposes of Radioactive Wastes. Routinely inspects, surveys and posts laboratories.

The Radiation Safety Office also, Issues Personnel Dosimetry Performs Bioassays Calibrates Instruments Performs Sealed Source Wipe Tests

The Radiation Safety Office does even more! RSO Conducts Radiation Safety Training Provides Emergency Response Provides Periodic Inspections of Radiation Machines

Many of your radiation safety questions, can be answered at our web site.

Radiation Protection Program Manual (RPPM) is The RPPM explains all aspects of the radiation safety program at WSU.

SUMMARY WSU operates under a Broad Scope Radioactive Materials License issued by the Washington State Department of Health (DOH), in Olympia, WA. Rules and Regulation for radiation safety are Promulgated by DOH in Title 246 of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) The Guiding Radiation Safety Philosophy is ALARA As Low As Reasonably Achievable. The WSU Radiation Safety Committee Establish Radiation Safety Policies at WSU.

Test Time! Follow this link to the test. Use your WSU user name and password to sign in. Click on the training tab. Then click on the available training tab Find the radiation safety training RSP course, in the “OR” section, click on it and take the test.
