Bapetco NORM Control Case Study IDENTIFY ASSESS CONTROL & RECOVERY

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Temporary transfer of Licensed HSE advisor from Bed area to Obaiyed. NORM Management system implementation. PPE availability. Set an agreement with AEA.

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Licensed HSE advisor from Bed area to Obaiyed. TO carry out the required NORM measurements before starting any activity in suspected area. To advise the suitable PPE required for certain job. To follow up the implementation of work instruction and procedures mentioned in Bapetco NORM management system.

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study NORM Management system This system was established since 1996, in a form of work instructions and procedures. All the required information were collected together with surveys in one Manual to lay down how the hazards of NORM are managed within BAPETCO. NORM Manual was issued in September 2002 and distributed for implementation.

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study OBJECTIVE The purpose of this document is to lay down how the hazards of Ionizing Radiation are managed within BAPETCO. Radiological control strategies in Bapetco have been integrated within the general HSE management system. These strategies comprise measures against Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) and industrial radioactive sources on the site, to perform the following objectives: To reduce exposure to external radiation. To prevent internal contamination. To maintain environmental protection.

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study BAPETCO Policy Statement Protect its personnel, contractors and the environment against the hazards of exposure to ionizing radiation due to BAPETCO activities. Avoid uncontrolled releases of radioactive contaminated substances and to minimize the effects of past deposits Keep exposure As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) where exposure to ionizing radiation is not avoidable Prevent any exposure to ionizing radiation levels that result in an effective dose of more than 1 mSv/y above background to non- classified personnel and to the public

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Management - Policy, standards, strategy, audit. - Keep workers, Bapetco staff and contractors informed regarding NORM situation. - Ensure adequate environmental protection. HSE Department - Contact National Regulatory - Develop and update procedures - Support Management efforts and field implementation efforts. - Inform Management of progress, results and compliance with standards. - Awareness training - Follow up dosimeteric system. - Keeping records and data. NORM MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Consultant: - Provide technical advise. - Provide and analyze dosimeters. - Training. Fields - Implement policy and procedures. - Ensure that employees adhere to policy and - procedures. -Provide Personal Protective Equipment. -Follow up the personnel dosimeteric system in quarterly bases. -Carry out NORM survey by certified staff when required. -Training NORM MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study NORM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM The Management System consists of the following elements: Prgramme plan Area Radiation Monitoring Personnel Monitoring Protective Equipment Training And Awareness Norm Handling Procedures Work Instruction NORM Waste Management Regulatory Rule No: Pet-1

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study PPE availability.

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study AEA agreement Radiation survey for all units before and after opening. Gamma spectrometric analysis for sludge samples to evaluate the radioactive content. Identify the units which contain NORM with specific activities higher than 2 Bq/g. Supervising the de-sludging operation and packing. Identifying the NORM waste drums interims of radiation levels and registration numbers at the NORM store yard.

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Activities carried out under supervision of AEA: Removal of the Man hole. Strainer Cleaning. De-sludging of the API. De-sludging of injection water Tank (T 4401).

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Removal of the Man hole Procedure Wear proper PPE ( Disposal Coverall, Rubber Gloves, rubber boots, Dust mask ). During cutting the drain pipes a container should be placed to host any spill. Blocking all opening of the removed man hole. Remove the Block to the surface and to be kept at the NORM store yard. Cleaning the pipe connected to API by inward jetting in such a way that all sludge's are trapped inside.

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study NORM survey around Man HoleNORM measurements inside the Man hole Watering the area around the Man hole blockRemoving Block by Crane

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Blocking all opening of the removed man hole Remove the Block to the surface Block at the NORM store yard.

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Strainer Cleaning Procedure. Strainer to be transferred back from evaporation pond to API. Strainer should be contained during transportation to avoid any spreading of NORM. Cleaning can be done inside the API in such away that all loose contaminants are kept inside the bottom of the API

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Contaminated Strainer at evaporation pond NORM measurements of Strainer Strainer during cleaning inside the API. All contaminants are kept inside the API

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Strainer after cleaning

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study De-sludging of the API Use of 12 inch pipe with controllable bottom is accepted. The pipe should be washed from outside in the API before moving to the drums. The drums should be coated from inside and outside by epoxy or similar material. A plastic bag 1mm thick should be placed inside the drums to host the sludge. The drums should be closed firmly. All drums should be numbered, surveyed, documental and kept at the NORM store yard.

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Pipe with controllable bottom used for De sluding Washing the pipe from outside in the API before moving to the drums. A plastic bag 1mm thick placed inside the drums to host the sludge. API

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study All drums numbered, documental and kept at the NORM store yard. Surveying the Drums The pipe contains the NORM waste moving from API to the drums. Filling Drum with NORM waste

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study De-sludging of injection water Tank (T 4401) Ventilations to eliminate most Hydrocarbon Vapors and to remove any Radon that the NORM may have generated. De-sludging can be done by using vacuum truck to remove the existing materials from tank to the suitable drums. EWI 463 to be followed.

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Taking sludge sample for analysisSludge Sample De-sludging done by vacuum truck Filling Drums with NORM waste

Bapetco NORM Control Case Study Conclusion: 48 Drums of contaminated sludge were collected from API and stored at NORM store yard. 193 Drums of contaminated sludge were collected from injection water Tank (T 4401) and stored at NORM store yard. 10 Drums of contaminated sand from the Man Hole pit. NORM measurements reached background level on both Strainers and (T4401).
