NATURAL GAS VEHICLES AMERICA’S NEW CHOICE FOR CLEAN TRANSPORTATION Scott Dahlstrom, Jackson Energy Authority 1

Introduction Basic Terms Reasons to use CNG Risks Tennessee Activities Task Force Introduction 2

Natural Gas Terminology NGV – Natural Gas Vehicle ▫ Cars, pickups, buses CNG – Compressed Natural Gas ▫ 3600 – 5000 psi LNG – Liquefied Natural Gas ▫ -260 o F GGE – Gasoline gallon equivalent ▫ 1.14 CCF depending on heating values 3

Fast Fill Stations Fast fill stations fill vehicles rapidly using compression equipment and fuel storage systems. They take about the same time to fill as any gasoline pump. 4

Time Fill Stations Time fill stations typically fill the vehicles overnight. They are ideal for fleets that return to a central location or for a home filling station. 5

WHAT’S AVAILABLE Below are just a few examples of the CNG vehicles on the road today! 6

3 Reasons to Choose Natural Gas as a Transportation Fuel Environmental Political Economic 7

Natural Gas is Clean It is considered to be the cleanest fossil fuel because it produces fewer emissions than other fuels. Honda Civic GX has been named the cleanest car on the road, even cleaner than the all electric Nissan Leaf. 8

Natural Gas is Domestically Produced 98% of the Natural Gas we use comes from North America! Approximately 60% of the oil we use comes from foreign countries. Approximately $1 billion a day leaves this country due to oil imports. American Fuel = American Jobs!! 9

Asia and Middle East 6,300,000 NGVs North America 120,000 NGVs South America 4,200,000 NGVs Africa 122,000 NGVs Europe 1,300,000 NGVs Around the world

Abundant Natural Gas The ongoing shift in natural gas prices reflects a permanent change across the energy sector—affecting the electricity, pipeline, coal and rail industries—and will make it more difficult for coal to compete with natural gas as a power source in the future. Generators will be reluctant to build anything but gas-fired plants over the next decade. Even if utilities and unregulated power companies built 80,000 MW of new natural gas combined-cycle generation to replace coal and nuclear retirements and support renewable energy, the natural gas surplus would only drop by half. Economics Natural Gas is less expensive than gasoline. ▫ $2.13/gge for CNG ▫ $3.72/gal for gasoline JEA’s Experience – ½ Ton Pick up Truck ▫ 14,400 miles/yr, 12 mpg, $11,000 conversion ▫ 5.5 year breakeven, $6,214 NPV over 10 year life  Excludes fueling station cost Convert diesel to CNG/gasoline ▫ 14,4000 miles/yr, 12 mpg, $3,000 conversion ▫ 1 year breakeven, $21,565 NPV over 10 year life  $11,000 CNG option - $7,000 diesel option = $3,000 net 15

Risks Oil prices drop Natural gas prices rise EPA bans hydraulic fracturing, “fracking” Competing fuels ▫ CNG / LNG ▫ Gasoline / Ethanol ▫ Diesel / Biodiesel ▫ Electric / Hybrids ▫ Propane 16
