What Are You Missing?

What You’ll Need to Graduate

What Compulsory Credits Do You Still Need to Graduate?

You are getting ready to register for Grade 11 courses. Why are the choices you make so important?

Academic (D), applied (A), and essentials (L) level courses change to become University (U), University- College (M), College (C), and Workplace (E) level courses New opportunities arise: Co-operative education/OYAP Specialist High Skills Major

Why you might want to take University-level courses: You need grade 11 prerequisites at the U level to get into grade 12 U- level classes You need six grade 12 U or M courses in order to apply to university

A typical pathway for a university- bound student… Grade 11 ENG3U (English) HRT3M (Religion) MCR3U (Mathematics) HSP3M (Anthropology) PPL3O (Phys-Ed) SBI3U (Biology) SCH3U (Chemistry) GPP3O (Peer Leadership) Grade 12 ENG4U (English) HRE4M (Religion) MHF4U (Mathematics) HHG4M (Anthropology) PSE4U (Phys-Ed) SBI4U (Biology) SCH4U (Chemistry) spare

Why you might want to take University/college-level courses: You are unsure of whether you want to attend college or university You can use M-level courses as a prerequisite to get into any U, M, or C-level class in grade 12

Why you might want to take college- level courses: You want to attend college and need a more practical background to prepare you for this You are thinking of going into a trade or apprenticeship

A typical pathway for a college-bound student… Grade 11 ENG3C (English) HRF3O (Religion) MBF3C (Mathematics) GPP3O (Travel and Tourism) PPL3O (Phys-Ed) HPC3O (Parenting) SBI3C (Biology) GPP3O (Peer Leadership) Grade 12 ENG4C (English) HRE4O (Religion) MAP4C (Mathematics) HHG4M (Anthropology) SCH4C (Chemistry) COP3X (Co-op, 2 periods) spare

Will you choose University or College? Will you go straight into the workplace? Will you become an apprentice?

What are some ways you can answer this question?

What is Co-operative Education? It is an instructional method which combines classroom-based instruction with on-the-job training. Two weeks of in-class preparation and then either a half-day (two periods) or full-day (four periods) employment placement. Students can help to find their own placements. Co-op students can be registered in the OYAP program.

What is OYAP? It stands for Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, which is a school-to-work transition program. Involves a co-op student registering with the province as an apprentice in a chosen field, where the co-op employer is qualified to take on an apprentice. Registered students can use their co-op hours towards completing their apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are available in service, motive power, construction, and industrial sectors.

What is a Specialist High Skills Major?

A specialist high skills major is a newly-designed, ministry-approved program. It allows students to: focus on knowledge and skills that are of particular importance in certain economic sectors obtain certifications recognized towards those sectors work towards meeting the requirements of the Ontario secondary school diploma (OSSD) receive special recognition with their diploma once they have successfully completed the program.

The SHSM has five components: 1.Specific high school credits (high school diploma credits and credits in the major area) 2.Compulsory certifications 3.Experiential learning 4.Reach ahead opportunities 5.Use of Ontario Skills Passport

Grade 11 Courses to Watch Out For MCR3U (Grade 11 Functions and Relations) There is an extremely high failure rate in this course for students who do not have over 75% in MPM2D This may possibly be the hardest course in high school. The curriculum is jam-packed and moves at an extremely fast rate so there is little time to practice new concepts. Only students who want to go into Engineering, Architecture, Applied Mathematics, or Applied Science should take this course.

Grade 11 Courses to Watch Out For SPH3U (Grade 11 Physics) There is an extremely high failure rate in this course for students who do not have over 75% in MPM2D and SNC2D. This course requires students to rearrange and solve algebraic equations so a good Mathematics background is necessary.
