NIHR Sheffield Clinical Research Facility International Clinical Trials Day 2015

In Collaboration with the University of Sheffield Celebrating clinical research in today’s NHS

On Tuesday May 19 th Sheffield Star published a feature article on the benefits of clinical research and highlighted the activities taking place on May 20 th around the Trust and University

The Trust highlighted the roles of those working in clinical research in the week preceding International Clinical Trials Day on social media and other Trust communications such as Link Magazine

Up to 80,000 impressions across all social media channels More than 27,000 individual accounts reached More than 479 shares, likes and comments on Facebook alone Several hundred retweets, clicks and engagements on Twitter

On Wednesday May 20 th BBC Radio Sheffield featured Prof Simon Heller and a trial patient in celebration of International Clinical Trials Day

On the same day a number of other activities took place to mark the first clinical trial conducted in 1747 by James Lind, Royal Naval Surgeon, who proved the link between citrus fruits and scurvy...

Sheffield College students studying Applied Biomedical Science toured the CRF at the Northern General Hospital site and attended presentations within cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery

Our staff were ready and waiting to let them know that it’s ‘OK to Ask!’

CRF Staff manned stands in clinical areas throughout the hospital to promote clinical research and OK to Ask!

Year 10 Students from Firth Park Academy were shown the NIHR Clinical Research Facility at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital

Again, the message was clear that it’s ‘OK to Ask!’

At 6pm a well attended public talk was held in the Medical School which explained why clinical research is important to the NHS, why it should be seen as core business and what it’s like to participate in. This was followed by a panel of speakers and patients answering questions from the audience

CRF Research Nurse, Branwen Ellison- Handley gave a perspective from the CRF

Afterwards, a host of interactive stands in the foyer of the Medical School provided an opportunity to learn more

Feedback from the evening was extremely positive and resulted in some brilliant outcomes...

“The event was made very enjoyable because of the informal and friendly attitude of the medical staff to the audience” “It was all very well organised and presented to us. I hope they will be another event similar that we can take part in as a school again” “Very engaging presentations by the team including by research nurse Branwen who captured the essence of the role and moving testaments from patients about why they became involved”

The Sheffield Telegraph featured a round up of the event and a short video featuring Ali Mortimer, Lead Nurse R&D Click on the image to watch the video

Of course, there were many other events across the country on May 20 th to mark the day Click on the image to watch the video

Naturally, Twitter shared much of the action with the research community and the public in the run up to the event and on the day itself K re-tweet reach #NIHROkToAsk

Without your help this simply would not have been possible. Thanks to everyone who gave up their time to support International Clinical Trials Day 2015
