Medication Administration & Supervision Training to Support Recovery (MASTSR) A medication certification training for para- professionals provided by ValueOptions®

MASTSR Training Overview The Medication Administration Supervision Training to Support Recovery program was created to certify unlicensed staff to safely assist with and/or supervise medication self-administration The MASTSR training curriculum and content was approved by the Department of Public Health This training program is being offered in 2012 to all adult Residential Care Homes. The trainings are conducted by a Registered Nurse at Value Options. The course is thirty two (32) hours and is comprised of three (3) eight (8) hour modules and two (2) four (4)hour practicums There is a written and practicum examination After successfully completing and passing the MASTSR training program, the participant receives a three year medication administration certification 2

MASTSR Training Overview Recovery is the guiding principle of the MASTSR program By training non-licensed staff to assist with medication self-administration, the nurse helps empower those individuals who can benefit from medication administration assistance from a para- professional, thereby increasing steps toward the individual’s maximum self-sufficiency. 3

MASTSR – Class Modules I, II and III 4 Module IModule II Module III Understand Your Scope of Duties Learn Medication Terminology Distinguish Drug Classifications Learn Medication Abbreviations Math for Medication Administration Medical/Psychiatric Conditions Drug Classifications Communicating with Provider Managing Emergencies Basic Member Rights Medication Errors Proper Storage of Medication Controlled Medication Count Receipt and Disposition Form Medication Administration Record Documentation of Medication Administration and Refusals Infection Prevention Control Each module above is an 8 hour class Classes are interactive, incorporating hands-on demonstrations and videos

MASTSR – Practicums There are two practicums (total 8 hours) – On-site at a classroom location – 4 hours – On-site at participant's own facility – 4 hours The practicums are designed to ensure each participant has incorporated the classroom material and can transfer this knowledge to actual practice; is able to demonstrate providing assistance with medication self-administration; is able to demonstrate the proper handling and storage or medications. 5
