L ET ’ S L ABEL O UR O WN C OORDINATE P LANE We need to label: x-axis y-axis origin

P LANE AS N UMBER L INES ? Talk in your groups about….. Are we able to say that the x-axis is the horizontal number line? Why or why not? Are we able to say that the y-axis is the vertical number line? Why or why not? The point at which the axes cross is known as the origin

O RDERED P AIRS Consist of two numbers The first number, a.k.a. the x-coordinate, indicates how far to the left or right the point is from the y-axis The second number, a.k.a. the y-coordinate, indicated how far up or down the point is from the x-axis. Ordered Pairs are written as: (x-coordinate, y-coordinate)

B ATTLE S HIP You will need… Graph paper Pencil

B ATTLE S HIP Let’s pair up! Fold a sheet of graph paper in half and draw 2 coordinate planes (one grid above the fold and the other below) Plane should be labeled from -5 to +5 on both the x and y axes

B ATTLE S HIP On the coordinate plane graph that is above the fold, plot the locations of five ships. The ships must be placed vertically or horizontally (not diagonally) Points are as follows: Aircraft carrier -- 5 points long Battleship -- 4 points long Submarine -- 3 points long Destroyer -- 3 points long Tug-Boat -- 2 points long

Y OUR G RAPH S HOULD L OOK S OMETHING L IKE T HIS

B ATTLE S HIP After you have plotted your ships, each person will take turns guessing a coordinate If your partner guesses one of the coordinates that your ship is on, you must say “HIT” If your partner guesses one of the coordinates that your ship is not on, you must say “MISS” Once you partner has guessed all the coordinates on one ship, that ship has “SUNK” The player who sinks all their partners ships first wins!

B EFORE Y OU G O … Plots these points on a separate sheet of graph paper. Hint: Don’t forget to label you axes and the origin! Plot: A (1,2) B (3,8) C (-2,8) D (-8,4) E (-5,2) F (6,-1) G (7,-6) H (-3,-5)
