6.2 G RAPH O RDERED P AIRS

A GRID a network of lines that cross each other to form a series of squares, creating columns and rows.

C AN YOU THINK OF A TIME WHEN YOU HAD TO LOCATE A POINT BY MOVING ALONG AND UP A G RID ? Making a graph Finding your city in a map Completing a crossword puzzle

A coordinate grid has two perpendicular lines, or axes, labeled like number lines. The horizontal axis is called the x-axis. The vertical axis is called the y-axis. The point where the x-axis and y-axis intersect is called the origin. Origin

C OORDINATE G RID Is a grid used to locate points. Points on a coordinate grid can be given a unique name in the same way each house on a street has a unique number.

H OW DO YOU THINK YOU CAN NAME A POINT ON A COORDINATE GRID ? The numbers on a coordinate grid are used to locate points. We use an ordered pair to name points on a coordinate grid.

O RDERED P AIR Each point on a coordinate grid can be identified by an ordered pair of numbers; that is, a number on the x -axis called an x -coordinate, and a number on the y - axis called a y- coordinate. ( 3, 7 ) Why do you think they are called ordered pair?
