UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production An Introduction to Using Logic Studio

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production Logic History Originated as an application called Notator on the Atari ST Then developed into Emagic Logic Available on Windows and Mac until version 6 Logic Pro and Logic Express ( reduced version) for version 7 Acquired by Apple and now called Logic Studio Version in labs is Logic Studio 8 Current Version is Logic Studio 9

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production Logic is a Software Sequencer Logic Studio is primarily a software sequencer Supports recording and arranging of audio, MIDI and software instrument tracks and live input via instrument or microphone Software includes many virtual instrument devices such as piano and keyboard types used in popular music from the last four decades Also has many capable synthesizer modules for general playing and effects sounds Includes thousands of clips, effect sounds, ambiences and loops for just about any instrument - these are contained in the Jam Packs A full install of Logic Studio 8 is around 50GB

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production Using Logic Logic bases its file naming around the concept of a Project Logic has several pre-built setups called Project Templates The pre-built project templates feature collections of virtual instruments and tracks associated with a particular music genre or style When starting Logic you can opt to start with an empty project Logic then prompts you to choose a new empty track for your project Track options are: Audio - select if you want to use re-recorded clips from the Jam Packs or live input Software Instrument - select if you want to insert and record a virtual instrument device such as a synthesizer, dedicated instrument e.g virtual organ / piano or a software sampler which has its own collection of sounds to emulate instruments If you create a setup you want to use again you can save it as a Custom Template Your custom templates will appear each time you launch Logic

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production Logic Basics The next few slides will guide you in creating a single virtual instrument track featuring an EXS24 virtual sampler with a Steinway Grand Piano sample set and then saving the file to a new custom template

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production Choosing Project Template - Select Empty Project

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production Choosing New Track - Select Software Instrument

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production Name New Track - Select the track name and rename to Steinway Grand Piano

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production Select Mixer View

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production Click on Channel Strip IO and Insert EXS24 Sampler

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production Select the area of the EXS24 Sampler shown and from the list choose Acoustic Pianos - Steinway Grand Piano The audio samples will load and you may then close the view of the sampler by selecting the cross on the top left of the sampler window

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production Check to ensure the volume levels are not set too high! Put on the headphones Play some notes on the keyboard - you should hear the piano sounds Save you work as a Project Template by choosing File - Save as Template - name your new template EXS24 Steinway Grand Piano Close Logic and Restart Your new project template should now be available in a folder called My Templates Saving your file as a Project Template

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production The left side of the Transport Bar has similar functionality to recoding devices such as music and media players Select the Record button and begin to play your piece Select Stop to end recording Double click the stop button to send the playhead back to the start Press Play to hear your recorded piece Recording what you play Transport Bar Record Play Stop Switches the beat counter (metronome) on and off

UFCEXR-20-1Multimedia Sound Production The next few slides show some of the many software instruments that are available in Logic - each one is featured in the same list as the EXS24 sampler - select the default tab to reveal the various presets for each device - try them out for yourself…
