Home Automation We have appliances in our dorm rooms and home. –Stereo –Computer –Lamps –Fans All appliances that are plugged into an electrical socket are all connected via the wires in the building.

Home Automation (continued) X10 manufactures a device (a controller) that can monitor and send signals on the electric wiring in a building. The controller is plugged into an unused electric socket. From a remote control and computer interface we can tell the controller to send particular signals over the electric wires.

Home Automation (continued) X10 also manufactures receivers that are installed between an appliance and the wall socket that the appliance is plugged into. We can then, from the remote control, tell the controller to send a signal to the receiver to turn the appliance on and off.

Home Automation (continued) Other recievers and appliances are available from X10 –Lights –Motion detectors –Thermostats –cameras

Home Automaton A software system designed to manage and control home automation devices The server is the persistent store of property data and interfaces with the home automation devices The client is the user program used to manage the property information stored on the server

The Server As Persistent Store Store virtually unlimited number of zones and devices Supports virtually unlimited number of users Stores server settings All data saved in xml format

Server X10 Support Supported Interfaces – CM11a Serial Port Interface Supported Modules –Lamp Module –2-Pin Appliance Module –3-Pin Appliance Module

The Client Allows login with user name and password Allows two types of users: admin and occupant Allows admin to display server properties Allows admin to add/delete users Allows all users to display property layout with images and display the location of home automation devices Allows all users to change the state of the home automation devices

Future Enhancements System –Support MD5 secure login Server –Support X10 2-Way Modules –Support multiple connections –Support virtual devices and timers Client –Allow user to change server properties –Allow user to add/remove/change zones –Allow user to add/remove/modify devices

Thank You
