The students will identify the significant changes brought about during the Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson presidencies by comparing and contrasting the decisions of each President Warm-up Question: Read the time line on pages and answer the following questions: Which event happened first-the Louisiana Purchase or Thomas Jefferson’s reelection as president? Who was President when the War of 1812 began? Motivation: What issues, personalities and events have dominated the era in which you live? What name or title might summarize this era?

Nullification Crisis Result of the Tariff of 1816 Britain decreased its exports to the U.S. Britain decreased its imports of U.S. cotton as a response South Carolina attempted to nullify the Federal law South Carolina nullified another Tariff of 1832 and President Jackson became enraged A compromise lowered the Tariff over a 10 year period and prevented South Carolina from seceding

Wanted to decrease the role of the Bank of the US Allowed the charter to run out in 1836 Jackson pulled the federal money out of the bank and placed it into state banks. Bank President called in the loans and refused to make new loans. This put many merchants and manufacturers into bankruptcy.
