THE ARGOS SYSTEM Yann Bernard CLS Group http://www.argos-system.org

The Argos system Argos is a global satellite-based location and data collection system dedicated to studying and protecting our planet's environment. It allows any mobile object equipped with a compatible transmitter: To be located across the world, To send data from measurement sensors connected to this transmitter.

The Argos system

Argos uplink frequency band Argos satellites launch years Argos system status Argos uplink frequency band Argos satellites launch years High data rate platforms Argos- 1 1978… Dedicated bandwith for low ouput power applications Argos-2 1998 2000 2002 2005 Argos-3 2006 2009 2012 2013 Argos-4 2016 2018 2020 … 401.650 401.690 MHz 401.300 401.580 Initial Argos frequency band and uplink modulation are preserved Sustainability of the Argos satellite system is compatible with long lifetime program (like Argo with floats lifetime ~10 years)

Space Agencies collaboration … 6 Argos operational satellites: 4 x Argos-2 & 2 x Argos-3 Argos-4 starts in 2016 with METOP-C and a NOAA satellite in 2017 OceanSat-3 from ISRO will bring Argos-4 also in 2018

The Argos system

Argos Global antennas Collect all the messages recorded by the satellites during a full orbit 3 global antennas in the Northern Hemisphere 1 global antenna in Antarctica collects ½ orbit only for METOP satellites operational since June 2011

Argos antennas network Collect data in real time for Argos platforms within satellite and antennas visibility at the same time A network of 65 regional real-time stations 2014-15 new antennae

2014 Argos data delivery time in minutes

2015 Argos data delivery time in minutes

Argos-3 features Thanks to a downlink and a high data rate channel, Argos-3 platforms can: Send more data (until10 times more than with Argos-2) Manage remotely Argos-3 platforms by commands Save power in transmitting only over satellite passes

Argos-3 platforms ~ 1500 active platforms daily: GDP, CO2 buoys, TRITON buoys, Argo floats, AWS,…

ArgosWeb https://argos-system.cls.fr A single secured web site to: View all positions on map (20 days) View Argos messages (20 days) Download data Export on Google Earth with error ellipses Manage users settings Put on copy other users Create guest accounts https://argos-system.cls.fr

Argos Web Mapping Trajectory data button Google Earth export button

Observations Observations: display and export decoded data (physical values with observation time/position)

Web services M to M distribution tool Communication based on SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) over HTTP. 20 days of data Data formats: XML, CSV and KML All data (sensors, raw data, diagnostics, …) are displayed XML format flexible and complete Service fully operational 24/7

Automatic Data Distribution Argos messages and observation data can be automatically sent to the user by : Emails, FTP, SMS Different sending strategies available : Data sent at each new dataset Data sent on a periodic mode (i.e. each hours) Different formats available: CSV, TXT, …

GTS processing service CLS is providing GTS processing and distribution for all met. & ocean platforms, including main international programs Variables such as Air Pressure, Air Temperature, SST, Wind are particularly useful. This International co-operation is helping weather centers to produce better forecasts and contributing in the long term to global climate studies. All GTS ocean platforms

GTS processing service Decode of messages from all ocean & met platforms using Argos Compute of physical values according to manufacturers formats Control the quality of the data according to WMO regulations Code data in WMO standards (Alphanumeric and BUFR bulletins Send data to National Weather Services for GTS distribution Service provided 24/7

Android application An Android application available to consult Argos tracks from a smartphone/pad.

Argos Forum Communication tool for Argos users Published 2 times a year / Editing YOUR articles Dedicated to oceanographers and biologists working with ARGOS Scientific vulgarization, outreach towards stakeholders Many years archive online http://www.argos-system.org Sent to ARGOS contact database: over 4000 scientists around the world How to participate? Just contact us and we will organize everything

Argos Community YouTube ARGOS channel: See new videos on Argos: PTT, system, tagging methods Publish your own movies…

Argos Community ARGOS Facebook account: Be part of the community in becoming of friend of Argos Find latest news Users testimonies Share experiences Find partners …

New Argos products 3.5 g Argos GPS PinPoint from Biotrack (Lotek group) for Bird tracking Microvawe Telemetry is working on a new 2 g Argos transmitter… 25 x 13 x 10mm

New Argos products E-TAG from Microwave Telemetry: the smaller and lighter popup tag SEATAG-TT  and SEATAG-SAM from DesertStar, popup and turtle tags with solar panels increasing the platform lifetime

SHARC project SHARC = Satellite High-performance ARGOS-3/-4 Receive/transmit Communication To implement ARGOS-3 and ARGOS-4 capabilities on a single license-free chipset (7mmx7mm) This miniaturized ARGOS transceiver will work at very low power consumption allowing deployments of ARGOS-3/4 technology in most applications. Will be provided to integrators in summer 2015 for testing
