©2003 Pearson Education, Inc., publishing as Longman Publishers. THE NEED TO IMITATE People—past and present—have felt the need to reproduce their surroundings, whether it be on the wall of a cave or on a piece of paper, on a bar of soap or on a piece of marble. Artists have thus chosen different MEDIA to create their imitations, some of which reflect directly the surroundings, and others that represent an inner reality rather than an external one.
