4 General TEA Definitions of New and Returning Raters Raters who have completed K–1 training but not 2–12 training will be new raters if they switch to 2–12 training, and vice versa.

7 Both new and returning raters will calibrate ◦ All certified ESL teachers will need to calibrate whether you have ESL students this year or not. There are three sets of online calibration activities. Each calibration set contains 10 students to rate, and all holistically assessed language domains are represented in each set. (Refer to your PLDs) ◦ For K–1: listening, speaking, reading, and writing ◦ For 2–12: listening, speaking, and writing A rater needs to rate at least 70 percent of the students correctly to demonstrate sufficient calibration. Turn in certificate to Kami for calibration (all) and course completion (new rater) Online Calibration Activities

TELPAS accountability TELPAS has become a significant part of accountability. It is more important than ever that TELPAS raters do their very best to be accurate. TEA is monitoring the yearly progress of ELL students *Look at last year’s data

Rater Checklist Attend training session Complete holistic rating training requirements Assemble and verify grades 2-12 student writing collections Rate your students – writing, speaking, listening, and reading (K&1 only) Return ratings and writing samples to Kami by April 4

What can NOT be included Page 23 manual Papers containing copied language from a textbook or other written source Papers reflecting heavy use of a dictionary or thesaurus Papers that show teacher’s correction Papers polished through editing Papers written primarily in the student’s native language Worksheets or question-answer writing assignments Papers that are brief, incomplete, or obviously rushed

STAAR Any accommodations given to ELL students on STAAR reading or writing will exclude from being exited from the program
