Volleying and Dribbling Chapter 26 Volleying and Dribbling

Chapter 26 Key Points Volleying and dribbling are typically exclusively games skills and used in sports such as volleyball and basketball Recently associated with children games, games of different cultures and games using innovative equipment (e.g. hacky sacks, volleybirds ) Require fine hand-eye coordination and are thus two of the last fundamental manipulative skills to develop in children

Chapter 26 Key Points Teaching Volleying Precontrol Level Tasks Children still struggling to achieve hand-eye coordination and directly flight of ball intentionally Provide a variety of opportunities to explore volleying Have children concentrate on: Watching the object as it approaches them and Making contact with the ball

Chapter 26 Key Points Teaching Volleying Control Level Tasks Geared to teach children to: Strike an object continuously with a bounce in self-space Control the amount of force Appropriate activities include: Volleying with different body parts Striking overhand and underhand Striking over designated lines with partner

Chapter 26 Key Points Teaching Volleying (cont) Utilization Level Tasks Aim to help children develop consistency and accuracy by: Controlling the direction and force of their strikes Produce a level surface for striking with a variety of body parts Combine striking with several different concepts (e.g. moving in relation to people and/or objects) and strategic placement

Chapter 26 Key Points Teaching Volleying (cont) Proficiency Level Tasks Geared towards helping children: Move consistently and accurately in relation to others, in unpredictable, dynamic situations Strike an object while simultaneously focusing on the surrounding activities

Chapter 26 Key Points Teaching Volleying (cont) Progression spiral suggests a sequence for developing volleying Activities found in text Identifies Tasks Identifies Challenges Assessment ideas found throughout chapter

Chapter 26 Key Points Dribbling The skill of striking downwards with the hands. Teaching Dribbling Precontrol Level Tasks Exploration of striking the ball down repeatedly in self-space, then walking and dribbling Involve children making contact with the ball so that it comes back to them while in a stationary position

Chapter 26 Key Points Teaching Dribbling (cont) Control Level Tasks Focus should be on: Varying dribbles (i.e. different heights and positions around the body) Dribbling with non-dominant hand Dribbling while traveling

Chapter 26 Key Points Teaching Dribbling (cont) Utilization Level Tasks Involve incorporating dribbling into beginning dynamic game-like situations requiring: Combining dribbling with other skills Dribbling with either hand without looking at the ball

Chapter 26 Key Points Teaching Dribbling (cont) Proficiency Level Tasks Geared to help children develop an automatic level of dribbling Tasks should focus on changes in speed, direction and pathways at will Enjoyment of dynamic game situations involving larger groups Strategic development

Chapter 26 Key Points Teaching Dribbling (cont) Progression Spiral suggests a sequence for developing dribbling Activities found in text Identifies Tasks Identifies Challenges Assessment ideas found throughout chapter

Progression Spiral for Developing the Skill Theme of Volleying   • PROFICIENCY LEVEL Playing modified volleyball Volleying in a line formation Spiking Striking downward with force Serving overhand over the net Striking with different body parts while traveling   • UTILIZATION LEVEL Serving underhand over the net Volleying three on three Volleying continuously to a partner Volleying over a net Striking to the wall—varying levels, force, and body position Volleying with a volleybird Playing Aerial Soccer Volleying with the foot Striking a ball continuously with different body parts Volleying game: child-designed • CONTROL LEVEL Obstacle‑Course Volley Playing one‑bounce volleyball Playing Keep It Up Volleying to a partner (overhead pattern) Volleying a ball upward (overhead pattern) Volleying to the wall (overhead pattern) Striking over a low net (underhand pattern) Playing Four Square, Two Square (underhand pattern) Playing Hoop Volley (underhand pattern) Striking a ball over a line (underhand pattern) Striking a ball to the wall (underhand pattern) Striking a ball upward with the forearms (the bump) Striking a ball upward (underhand pattern) Striking a ball noncontinuously with different body parts • PRECONTROL LEVEL Striking lightweight objects Striking with different body parts Striking a balloon forward Striking balloons in the air

Progression Spiral for Developing the Skill Theme of Dribbling   • PROFICIENCY LEVEL Small‑group basketball Dribble/Pass Keep Away Dribbling and throwing at a target Making up fancy dribbling/passing routines Dribbling and passing in game situations Dribbling while dodging Dribble Tag Now You’ve Got It, Now You Don’t Dribbling against opponents: group situations   • UTILIZATION LEVEL Dribbling against an opponent: one on one Dribbling and passing with a partner Mirroring and matching while dribbling Dribbling around stationary obstacles Dribbling in different pathways Starting and stopping while changing directions Dribbling while changing directions Dribbling and changing speed of travel • CONTROL LEVEL Moving switches Dribbling and traveling Dribbling in different places around the body while stationary Dribbling with the body in different positions Switches Dribbling and looking Dribbling at different heights Dribble like a basketball player All the time dribble • PRECONTROL LEVEL Dribbling and walking Bouncing a ball down (dribbling) continuously Bouncing a ball down and catching it
