1 Striking with Long-Handled Implements
Chapter 28 Striking with Long-Handled Implements

2 Chapter 28 Key Points Striking with Long-Handled Implements
Chapter focuses on: Horizontal swing (sidearm pattern): used when striking with a bat Vertical swing (underhand swinging pattern): used when striking with a hockey stick or golf club. Also used with stick dribbling Box 28-2 and 28-3 illustrate each distinctive striking pattern’s developmental characteristics Intent is to introduce children to these striking patterns

3 Chapter 28 Key Points Teaching Striking with Long-Handled Implements
Precontrol Level Tasks Encourage exploration of a variety of implements using large stationary objects to strike After initial experiences with static object, provide tasks that enable children to explore controlling object while traveling Focus is for children to make contact with object

4 Chapter 28 Key Points Teaching Striking with Long-Handled Implements (cont) Control Level Tasks Children at this level can consistently strike object and beginning to develop mature patterns Provide tasks that combine traveling while striking with other variables which include: Changes in speed and direction Striking a pitched ball Striking for distance

5 Chapter 28 Key Points Teaching Striking with Long-Handled Implements (cont) Utilization Level Tasks Children at this level can strike with control and choose appropriate striking pattern. Provide tasks that challenge children to strike in more unpredictable, dynamic situations (e.g. involving changes in directions and speed in response to an opponent)

6 Chapter 28 Key Points Teaching Striking with Long-Handled Implements (cont) Proficiency Level Tasks Children can consistently and accurately strike while stationary or while moving Provide experiences that facilitate the development of ability to strike while focusing on the strategy and outcome of the action

7 Chapter 28 Key Points Teaching Striking with Long-Handled Implements (cont) Progression spiral suggests progression of tasks Activities found in text Identifies Tasks Identifies Challenges Assessment ideas found throughout chapter

8 Progression Spiral for Developing the Skill Theme Striking with Long-Handed Implements
• PROFICIENCY LEVEL Half Ball—bats One‑Base Baseball Six‑Player Teeball Minihockey Whiffle Ball Golf Directing the pathway, distance, and speed of an object (Call your Hit)—bats Directing the pathway, distance, and speed of an object—golf Keep Away—hockey Striking to dodge an opponent—hockey • UTILIZATION LEVEL Two‑on‑one hockey Keeping It Moving—hockey Passing and receiving on the move—hockey Striking from a stationary position to a moving target—hockey One‑on‑one hockey Traveling and striking for a goal—hockey Pathways, speeds, and directions—hockey Performing a continuous dribble and change of direction—hockey Dribbling and changing directions backward—hockey Directing the air pathway of the struck object—golf Playing Hockey Bowl (small targets) Playing Hoop Golf Striking to targets at various distances—golf Batting, combining distance and placement Striking a pitched object varying the distance—bats Hitting to open spaces—bats Directing the placement of an object—bats Grounders and flies—bats • CONTROL LEVEL Striking while dodging stationary obstacles—hockey Striking a pitched ball—bats Striking a self-tossed ball to different distances—bats Throwing a ball in the air and striking it—bats Striking to varying distances—golf Hitting a stationary ball from different places—bats Striking to different places—hockey Traveling and striking while changing pathways—hockey Traveling and changing speeds—hockey Traveling, stopping, and controlling the ball—hockey Traveling slowly while striking a ball—hockey Striking to a stationary partner—hockey Hit and Run—bats Striking suspended objects—bats Striking a stationary ball for distance—bats Level swings—bats Striking a stationary ball—bats Striking to a target (Around the World)—hockey Striking to targets—hockey Striking for distance—golf or hockey Striking in the air—golf Striking a stationary ball on the ground—hockey or golf • PRECONTROL LEVEL Striking (dribbling) a ball in self-space—hockey Striking off a batting tee—bats Striking to large targets—hockey/golf Striking a stationary ball—golf or hockey
