Using Video Technology to Teach Students Parking and Transportation Policies/Services Glenn Shenker, Dave Flores - Parking and Transportation Services Teaching, Learning, and Understanding Policies, Procedures, and Services Response or Results Pre-Test and Post-Test Evaluation Solution or Method Next Steps or Future Plans Parking and Transportation Services at Cal Poly Pomona Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) is a large and complex operation. In our effort to continue to market and promote the PTS policies and procedures, services, and transportation options to the campus community and outside guests, PTS created a short, six minute video for our website. This closed-caption video was introduced to the campus community in Fall 2009 Students were asked ten questions directly related to PTS policies, services, and transportation options. For multiple choice answers, the two main responses are listed. One hundred three students were surveyed. Here are some highlights. Parking and Transportation Services is reviewing the responses from the assessment study. Based on the responses, the video program is being evaluated on how effective it is to increase awareness for PTS policies, procedures, and services. This includes: Evaluating responses to see what services students are aware of and which are not. Communicating to students the importance of understanding PTS policies, procedures, and services. Teaching students that these services are free without any fees Teaching students the benefits of ridesharing and applying them in the working world after they graduate Collaborating with other key departments on campus and creating awareness of PTS services at campus events. The project was divided into two environments – the pre-test portion and the post-test/ assessment study. Pre-Test Before Viewing the PTS Video In Summer /Fall 2009, PTS staff attended Orientation sessions and hosted a Bronco Fusion workshop to introduce students to the video. A written pre-test was administered with ten questions relating to PTS policies, services, and transportation options. Students were entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $25 Cal Poly Pomona gift card. Post-Test - Assessing the Effectiveness of the PTS Video After viewing the video, students were asked to re-take the written test with the same identical questions. PTS staff collected the data and tabulated the results. The test environment remained the same True or False – Permits must be displayed at all times. Before Video - 99% responded Yes; 1% responded No After Video - 100% responded Yes; 0% responded No Which of the following complimentary services does PTS offer? Before Video - 56% responded true; 10% false; 27% don’t know After Video - 94% responded true; 3% false; 0% don’t know True or False – Bicycles can be impounded by PTS if they are parked illegally. Before Video - 68% responded true; 4% false; 33% don’t know After Video - 96% responded true; 3% false; 3% don’t know The assessment segment has been completed. PTS is currently in the feedback/dissemination stage of the project. As a result, PTS will continue to explore using video technology to effectively communicate policies, procedures, and services to the campus community. In this stage, strategies are being developed and some already in place which include: Utilize video technology to create brief messages instead of using flyers and messages Use students in future videos that other students could identify with. Partner with key, visible departments to promote PTS services at campus events. Show videos in key areas on campus such as the Marketplace and Bronco Student Center. Additional assessments may be done once these strategies are in place. Cindy Tsui, BHS Major, interviews students at a Bronco Basketball game. Parking and Transportation Services “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles – Getting from Here to There” workshop at Bronco Fusion Workshop Fall PTS Staff member Donna Pearson informing students at summer orientation sessions. The goal of Parking and Transportation is reflected in our mission statement. Parking & Transportation Services is dedicated to maintaining accessible and attractive parking facilities. The objective is to manage parking resources efficiently so that students, faculty, staff, and visitors are able to park conveniently and maintain commuter programs, promote transportation alternatives, and reduce parking demand. Purpose of the Assessment To evaluate the effectiveness of video technology in teaching students Parking and Transportation policies, procedures, and services. Why use Video Technology for Learning? Parking and Transportation Services determined that marketing has to be effective and informative, especially to new students. s and flyers serve a purpose and are informative. Students are more exposed to the internet and embrace new technology and social networking sites such as YouTube. A quick look at the home page on the Parking and Transportation website.
