Starting Questions Can you tell what’s the difference between an acquaintance and a friend? There are many ways to make friends with ( 與 … 交 友 ) others nowadays. Could you think of some types of friendship? Which type do you prefer the most? Why? What is your definition ( 定義 ) of friendship? What are some characteristics that you think a friend should have?

Sample Conversation (1) (Tom and John met each other in the park.) T: What’s up? You look awful today. J: I was blamed by my boss yesterday. He said that I didn’t finish the job he assigned on time. And I told him that’s mainly because he kept changing his mind. But he still insisted that he did everything right. T: Come on. Cheer up! It sounds apparently not your fault. J: Well. I just can’t get it out of my mind so soon. T: Don’t make yourself so miserable. Let’s go have a bite and just be my guest!

Sample Conversation (2) A: Hey, Bryan. You look pretty happy today. What happened? B: Well, I met one of my key pals last Saturday and it turned out that we also get along very well with each other in real life, too. We both like action movies and prefer pearl milk tea much more to green tea, A: Wow. Sounds like you guys have a lot in common. B: I guess so. Originally I thought I can’t get any true friendship on the Internet, but I’m a believer in Internet friendship now. A: Hey, don’t jump to the conclusion so soon! You’ll still have to watch out and protect yourself. B: Sure. Thanks for your advice. See you later.

Poem (1): “My Friends” by Emily Ryon My Friend Has a shoulder to lend. My Ally Will wipe the tears when I cry. My Chum Laughs with me, even when I’m dumb. My Advocate Is someone who will never quit. My Patron Will never look at me and shun. My Supporter Won’t care if I’m shorter. My Comrade Will help when I’m sad. My Friend Will be with me to the end. From In Detail (1)

Questions for Poem (1) How many different roles of a friend were mentioned in the poem? Do you agree with it? Can you think of any other roles that a friend can be?

Poem (2): “Everyone Needs Someone” by Helen Steiner Rice People need people and friends need friends And we all need love for a full life depends Not on vast riches or great acclaim, Not on success or on worldly fame, But just in knowing that someone cares And holds us close in their thoughts and prayers For only the knowledge that we’re understood Makes everyday living feel wonderfully good, And we rob ourselves of life’s greatest need When we “lock up our hearts” and fail to heed The outstretched hand reaching to find A kindred spirit whose heart and mind Are lonely and longing to somehow share Our joys and sorrow and to make us aware That life’s completeness and richness depends On the things we share with our loved ones And friends. From In Detail (1)

Questions for Poem (2) What are some things that friends will do for us when according to ( 根據 ) the poem? Could you name ( 列舉 ) some?

Discussion Questions Do you classify ( 分類 ) your friends according to the degree of intimacy ( 親密度 ) you have with them? If so, what’s your classification? Have you ever befriended a person who you regret ( 後悔 ) to befriend in the long run ( 最終 )? People often use the proverb ( 俗諺 ) “Birds of a feather flock together” ( 物以類聚 ) to comment on the common characteristics friends share. Do you agree? Why or why not?
