Sustainable use of facilities constructed for 25 th UNIVERSIADE Winter Games in Erzurum Dr. Süleyman Toy Emine Bilgen Eymirli Dr. Rıfat Altan Northeast Anatolia Development Agency (KUDAKA) Erzurum 2011

Sustainable use… Economic, social and cultural contributions of large sportive organizations to the areas where they are held are so big that generally not only cities but also nations get into a fierce rivalry to be winner.

Sustainable use… The city of Erzurum is a medium - scaled and unindustrialised city. People are generally busy with service sector in the centre of the city. Human population in the city centre is The centre of Erzurum is an old settlement dating back to nearly years ago and therefore the city has a historical urban structure combined with a newly developing modern neighbouring.

Sustainable use… Harsh continental climatic features are prevalent in the city and its proximity, Thick and consistent snow cover for more than a 100-day period, People have not seen it as an advantage of their homeland. For nearly decade winter tourism has been seen as an alternative source of income by local people and its infrastructure has reach up to a certain level.

Sustainable use… The year 2007 is a breakthrough for the fate of city about its development in the winter tourism because the city won the 25 th UNIVERSIADE Winter Games

Sustainable use… The Games has given much to the city to not only social aspects but also economically including the sportive facilities some of which are the most modern and only one in the world.

Sustainable use… According to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) report on Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the games contributed greatly to Gross domestic product and Job Creation in the country.

Sustainable use… Conclusions Following suggestions can be proposed for the facilities in Erzurum to be used sustainably; To reduce legal procedures (such as the abolishment of visa) to attract more people to use and introduce these facilities, To begin from now on working to attract a bigger organisation than the UNIVERSIADE, To begin from now on working to promote and market the jumping towers by making them a brand specific to Turkey and Erzurum and by producing their models to sell as souvenirs,

Sustainable use… All kind of supportive infrastructure either social, economical, educational and cultural or constructional to the future perspective of the facilities should be prepared, A thoroughly planned and prepared promotion and marketing strategy by professional foreign or domestic firms should absolutely be used,

Sustainable use… A promotion and marketing based voluntary platform should be established by local people in Erzurum to educate, encourage and make aware people about the benefits of the facilities and winter tourism, Alternative and supportive activities combined with the facilities should be considered and planned. Good application samples and transfer of innovations should be performed to see the possible results of the attempts to be carried out in Erzurum.

Thank you…
