Introduction to Instruments 5th Grade Band Ms. Lisa Phillips

WOODWIND FAMILY Flute Clarinet Oboe Saxophone Bassoon

FLUTE You blow across the tone hole to produce a sound. The instrument is played with both hands and held horizontal to the mouth.

CLARINET When air is blown between the reed and the mouthpiece, the reed vibrates producing a sound. The clarinet is played with both hands in a vertical position from the mouth.

OBOE Sound is produced when the player blows into the instrument allowing the double reed to vibrate. The oboe is played with both hands in a vertical position.

SAXOPHONE When air is blown between the reed and the mouthpiece, the reed vibrates producing a sound. The saxophone is played with both hands and across the body letting the left side of the horn to rest beside the players right leg

BASSOON Sound is produced when the play blows into the instrument allowing the double reed to vibrate and flow through the vocal. The bassoon is played with both hands and across the body letting the side of the horn to rest beside the players right leg

BRASS FAMILY Trumpet Trombone French Horn Baritone Tuba

TRUMPET By buzzing your lips on the mouth piece, it produces sound. The instrument has 3 valves and is played directly straight out from the mouth.

TROMBONE By buzzing your lips on the mouth piece, it produces sound. The trombone is played with a slide rather than keys or valves and is played straight out from the mouth.

FRENCH HORN By buzzing your lips on the mouth piece, it produces sound. The instrument has three valves and is played across the body resting its bell on the performers right leg.

BARITONE By buzzing your lips on the mouth piece, it produces sound. The instrument has 3 valves and rests on the players right leg in an up-right position.

TUBA By buzzing your lips on the mouth piece, it produces sound. The instrument has 3 valves sits in an up-right position.

PERCUSSION Percussion instruments are played with drum sticks, mallets, hands, etc., being stroked to produce a sound.

TIME TO CHOOSE Write down the two instruments you are most interested in playing for 5th grade band.
