The College Office of Undergraduate Research & Mentoring Priscilla Auchincloss, Director Bausch&Lomb 202 Research Experience for Undergraduates in Physics & Astronomy Directors: Priscilla Auchincloss & Arie Bodek Research Experience for Undergraduates in Optical Science and Engineering Directors: Nicholas Bigelow & Priscilla Auchincloss Programs are run jointly: Contact Connie Jones, REU Program Dept of Physics & Astronomy Wilson Blvd. B & L Bldg. University of Rochester Rochester, NY Funded by the National Science Foundation Programs: The College’s Program for Women in Science and Engineering and the Departments of Physics and Astronomy and the Institute of Optics are jointly running two summer programs to support highly-qualified undergraduates to undertake supervised research projects in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and at the Institute of Optics, for a period of 10 weeks each summer. Eligibility: Most participants will be majoring in physics or engineering and will have completed at least 4 semesters of college physics or math with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference will be given to students with strong interest in gaining research experience in preparation for graduate study. Members of underrepresented minority groups, students with disabilities, and women are encouraged to apply. Participants in the REU program must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students who will have completed the bachelor's degree by May of this academic year are not eligible for REU programs, but are invited to apply to our graduate programs in physics or optics. Compensation: 10-week stipend is approximately $3100. A single room in an on-campus residence hall with other REU students is provided, plus $300 towards meals/incidentals for those living on campus. Travel expenses to Rochester are provided for non-Rochester students. Funding may also be provided in the following academic year to allow students to complete scientific articles on their research work and/or support their attendance and presentations at conferences. specialREU.html To apply to these programs ( Physics/Astronomy or Optics): 1. Complete the online application form, including your personal statement. Format your information to fit within the space provided. 2. Request two letters of recommendation from faculty members or employers familiar with your abilities, interests, and motivation towards research. In particular, letters from previous REU supervisors are appreciated. Please include with your application the complete e- mail addresses and regular mail addresses of each individual providing a letter. Letters may be sent via regular mail, fax, or to 3. Please include a copy of your transcript. For UR students, a printed copy of your ACCESS transcript is acceptable. 4. Application deadline is March 1, with rolling admission until spaces are filled. Faculty conduct research in diverse experimental and theoretical areas, including Astronomy & Astrophysics, Biological and Medical Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Plasma and Laser Physics, Quantum Optics, and Physics Education. Institute of Optics faculty conduct research in areas of experimental and theoretical of optical science and engineering. Each summer, the two departments’ combined research effort involves approximately 45 undergraduate students, in addition to approximately 220 graduate students, 35 postdoctoral research associates, and 50 regular faculty members. Much of the research performed by past undergraduate research assistants has been published in scientific journals. Many students have presented their work at national conferences and undergraduate research symposia. Over the 10-week summer research period, participants attend weekly informal seminars covering research topics and others, such as preparing for graduate school. These seminars are intended to foster discussion among REU students and faculty, and to serve as a basis for further social and scientific interaction. Students whose projects are primarily experimental are encouraged to attend mini- courses in electronics and in machine shop techniques. The core research experience takes place in the context of research groups working at the University's research facilities. Some program activities may be held jointly with other programs at Rochester, including the McNair Program and programs in Chemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, and in Bio Mechanical Engineering. Students present their work at an informal symposium at the end of the summer. They are encouraged to work with their research advisers toward completion of publications, submission of abstracts, and presentations of their work at professional and student conferences. Descriptions of previous year's REU projects can be found on the Web. Research Experience for Undergraduates In Chemistry Director: Thomas R. Krugh Contact: Marguerite Weston Attn:REU Department of Chemistry University of Rochester Rochester, NY Summer program of full-time scientific research, supporting discussion groups, research meetings, a short course on Photoinduced Charge Transfer, as well as social activities. Research problems are available across the broad landscape of contemporary chemical research: structure, mechanism, dynamics, synthesis, spectroscopy and theory; inorganic, organic, organometallic, physical, biological, polymer, nuclear and environmental chemistry. 10 Weeks: 5/26 - 8/3 Summer 2005 Stipend: $3,400 (for the ten week program) plus $600 towards University housing expenses.
