1 Summer Research Institute
Presented by: Rikki Gonzalez Transfer Mentor California State University Channel Islands Project ACCESO Hi everyone, my name is Rikki Gonzalez and I am currently a senior at CSU Channel Islands and serve as their transfer mentor to our local community colleges. I want to invite you to an exciting summer research opportunity at CSU Channel Islands. It’s for STEM students (those majoring in science, technology, engineering or math) interested in getting some real life, hands on experience. The competition to get into this program is very stiff; making this is a rare and exclusive opportunity.

2 Objectives Program overview Eligibility Participation guidelines
Application Q & A We are going to discuss an overview of the program itself Who is eligible The participation guidelines The application process And finally do some Q&A

3 Program Overview Authentic STEM research Small teams (3-4)
Field or lab This is a three-week research experience with CI faculty as research mentors. It is NOT a class. You will be working with other students in teams of 3-4 with guidance from your faculty mentor. Although you may be supporting the faculty member’s research, your team members will be conducting your own project. Student researchers will work with faculty members to: Develop a research project Collect data Analyze data Prepare a poster or PowerPoint slides to publically present their research.

4 Program Overview May 28 – June 15, 2013 40 hours per week
$1,440 stipend A stipend of $1,440 is paid to you if you participate. However, you must be available for the duration of the three week program that will run 40 hours a week, from May 28 – June 15, 2013.

5 Eligibility STEM majors CI and regional community college students
GPA 2.25 or above Intermediate algebra Some STEM coursework involving major AB 540 students are eligible This Summer Research Institute is open for both CI students and community college students from Moorpark College, Oxnard College, Santa Barbara City College, and Ventura College. About 15 students from the local community colleges and 15 from CSU Channel Islands will be selected based on your academic record (GPA must be a 2.25 or better), your personal statement (which will be a 500 word statement, answering just a few questions in your own words), on faculty recommendation and your transcripts. Your grade level is not necessarily important but rather what classes you have already taken are. For example; applicants must have taken intermediate algebra. AB540 students are more than welcome to apply for experience purposes only; unfortunately they are unable to receive a stipend. However, the institute is such a valuable experience that every year, since it first began in 2009, we have had AB540 students in the program.
