Introduction The International Children’s Digital Library (ICDL) has created an online library, for teachers, children, parents and many others to visit and read books online. ICDL wanted to expand the usage of their website to include a way for grandparents and grandchildren to correspond through reading books together online. Our service creates a centralized website for grandparents and grandchildren to communicate and share stories with audio recordings.

Introduction (cont’d) Benefits: – Grandparents and grandchildren are able to communicate with one another regardless of: distance varying time zones differing schedule. – The interface is simple and easy to use for older adults and children.

Requirements System Requirements: –Computer, microphone, Internet access, Flash Player and Flash Communication Server MX

Intended Users – Children ages 7 to 11 of varied cultures, interests and genders. – Grandparents of varying ages, cultural backgrounds, lifestyles and genders.  Both sets of users must have a basic knowledge of computer usage including simple website navigation.

Demo

Usability Test 7 subjects participated –3 grandparents –4 grandchildren The subjects had to accomplish tasks such as… –Registering a new account and logging in –Listening to a book and/or recording –Posting and reading messages All subjects had similar experience with the interface.

Usability Test Result Difficulty locating the page to record. Text fields were too short. Faulty error checking. Confusing feedback. Difficulty distinguishing between pages Picture icons were not clickable. Difficulty navigating to the previous pages.

Conclusion/Recommendations We had lots of FUN !!! We hope it will be fully functional in the future. –P–Providing back-end capabilities –I–Integration with ICDL –M–Multi-Language support –A–Adding more features

Acknowledgements Dr. Ben Schneiderman for his guidance and encouragement and Georg Apitz for his resourcefulness. HCI Labs, Jade Alburo and Sabrina Liao for giving us the inspiration to continue in our design efforts. Our usability test participants for taking their time to use this interface design and providing us with constructive feedback.
