Career Exploration Orientation Interim Experience 2007

ORIENTATION AGENDA Reflection Journaling Assignments to complete Professionalism Things to think about

The Importance of Reflection Journaling with purpose & meaning Reflect, don’t report Write to remember, clarify, & analyze

“You learn nothing from experience alone, you only learn from reflection on your experiences.”

Reflection Questions Set #1 your hopes: your fears: Three things about an organization’s culture that are important to you:

Reflections Questions Leadership Styles Organizational Hierarchy Mission Statement

Professionalism What are your exact start and end dates? What are my scheduled work hours? What is appropriate work attire? Keep personal business to a minimum

Confidentiality Agreements Just because you’re not getting paid doesn’t mean you can’t get fired Professionalism

Informational Interviews How did you obtain your position? What do you enjoy most about this position? What is a typical day like? What are the entry-level opportunities in this field? What are the trends in this field? What qualifications, skills, & personalities does your organization look for? What advice do you have for me?

Assignments to complete Reflection Questions weekly responses to Brian and (cc Faculty Sponsor) Final Evaluation mailed Wednesday, January 17 Grades due Thursday, February 1 st by faculty sponsor Pass/Fail Option only One elective credit

Before your arrive at your internship site, confirm with your site supervisor your starting date and work schedule. Be sure to thank them again for this opportunity.

Arrange to meet with your site supervisor during the first few days to review projects you will be working on. This will also help “set the tone” for a positive experience.

Making it Work What if I have nothing to do?…How would you deal with this? My Site Supervisor is so busy he/she has no time for me? …What do you do in this situation?
