The Radar Screen Project: Status Report and Next Steps Learning October 2010 Bob Baker Murry Christensen Suzanne Schneeman

Vision for this Project This project will result in an interactive graphical representation on The Learning CONSORTIUM website that will provide an insight on a wide range of technologies, tools, and methods that are or will be adopted in the future for learning solutions in the workplace. Adapted from Radar Screen planning document 9 February 2010 DRAFT

Topics for Discussion What we did following Learning 2009? Prepared use-case scenarios Devised an “adoption timeline” Developed a “wireframe” for data visualization Decided on a collection strategy Constructed a data collection tool Completed a pilot Delayed development of underlying data structure What did we learned from our efforts to date? Design Considerations Feedback What input do you have for next steps?

What We Did Use Case Scenarios A new learning facility is being planned months to build In use for 15 years Annual Budget-Planning Budgets are declining Learning is important Learning Program Design Requirements are different than any previous projects Timeline is compressed Long-term Learning Strategy Being Developed Change the status quo and increase the impact of learning Capitalize on affordances of new technologies

What We Did Adoption Timeline Scale “radar screen bands” Definition a tool or technology that… Sub-levels Invention Space… is in the incubation stage; may not have a specific application for workplace learning In the lab Prototype development Market Space… has achieved business, personal or K-12 use, but not used in the work place for learning applications Experimental Pilots underway Targeted implementation Work Space… is commonly used in the work place, but not specifically for learning applications Experimental Pilots underway Targeted implementation Commonly Used for Learning … is being used for specific learning applications in the work place Use cases are growing Growth is slowing Note: We also added a category “Almost past”

What We Did Wireframe

What We Did Data Collection Strategy Data Collection Options Considered Reports/Literature Survey MASIE Center Surveys “Scouts” “Governing Board” “Real-time” updatable environment “crowd sourcing” Decided on “Scouts” Selected set of Consortium Members Provide periodic feedback using a data collection tool Provide an “optic” adoption in their specific organization Represent a wide-range of private and public sectors

What We Did Data Collection Tool

What We Did Data Collection Tool

What We Learned Design Consideration: Wide Variation in Adoption Tool/Technology/ Methodology Number of scouts = 7 Invention Space Market Space Work Space Common for Learning Almost Past Smart phone11230 Table computers12210 Micro blogging01330 Video-on-Demand01240 Wikis00160

What We Learned Design Consideration: Scout Pool Ensuring the ample size is sufficiently representative Able to highlight both “central tendency” and “variation” Provide a basis “deeper dive” on adoption decisions strategies, and experiences Offer insight into adoption trends over time Enable consistent response rates Pilot rate: 16 Scouts + 7 Responses = 44 %

What We Learned Feedback What thoughts do you have about the adoption timeline? Need plain language Invention Space to Market Space flow; the others do not flow Technologies could stabilize at “almost past” Should be a stage for learning experiment/innovation What would you like to know about the technologies? The usual: vendor listings, feedback, best practices Milestones for each of the steps in the progression How to integrate into overall learning plan Who is actually using it; case studies; testimonials Likelihood of it sticking; level of effort to implement/sustain Other thoughts about the project you would like to share? Create a blog where project members can share observations/ideas Scouts collaboratively develop foundational charts; others rate

Input for Next Steps What is most/least useful about what we have designed to date? How would the Radar Screen be of use to you back at work? How can we capture/portray the richness in diversity of adoption experiences? What is missing in what we did so far?
